For the people who propose BP has not been trying their hardest to fix the leak and who seem the think the military can do a better job (they can, but nobody wants to have a nuke detonated in the Gulf), what do you think they would be able to do above and beyond BP?

I think bp should of thought this could of happened 30 years ago and had the proper stuff developed and waiting in the wings for "the event"

what really sucks is you won't be able to get any decent oysters around here, probably for years.

yup. Although I was never partial to gulf coast oysters. I prefer kumamoto or sunset beach.

hindsight is 20/20. They are working (presumably) as fast as possible to fix this situation.

JSt0rm01: You say this should have been thought of, but it was not. Perhaps it wasn't technically feasible 30 years ago to drill that deep, hence this would not have been a problem. I agree that this eventuality should have been planned out, but you always do miss something.

So instead of bashing BP for lack of foresight and playing the finger pointing game (which accomplishes nothing), if you want the government to get involved, what do you think they can do above and beyond what BP is doing?

They are going to try and pump mud down the hole and then cap in with crete

"BP begins novel effort to try to stop Gulf oil"

COVINGTON, La. — BP says it is trying to seal the blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico by pumping heavy mud into it.
BP said in a news release Wednesday that the "top kill" maneuver has started. The top kill has never before been tried a mile beneath the sea, and company officials say it could be a couple of days before they know whether it is working.
Engineers hope to pump enough mud into the gusher to overcome the flow of the well. Engineers plan to follow up the mud with cement that the company hopes will permanently seal the well.

BP's top executive has pegged the top kill's chance of success at 60 to 70 percent.

no clue but I do know the simple idea of being proactive instead of reactive can have amazing results. All of the experts should have it figured out before they stick their dicks down there. If you can drill that deep then you should have 6 redundancies on how to fix it including off site measures in place.

I believe their layers of redundancy all failed. How many layers are needed?

They obviously need a OFFSITE fix for when the entire site goes up in flames. Why does this not make sense?

Some things are physically impossible. The offsite fixes didn't work (ROV closing a valve or somesuch). People are outraged but with every activity there are risks.

I know what you are trying to do and it wont work. Those giant tits they keep trying to drop over it? How about 2 of them at every site.

They failed, hence another plan. This is how it works. You fucked up. Now try to fix the fuckup. Next time you fuckup, you have a very quick fix. The fix that Russia pioneered isn't quite usable here, so we make our own.

Well the government did put a plan in place in 1994 but decided not to buy the necessary equipment.

Shocking I know.

Links to this? I'd like to learn and I don't really take anything you say at face value. I'm sure you understand ():)
