So i'm watching the intros during the MNF game and the Ohio State guys always put an emphais in THE part...THE Ohio State University...why? Always wondered..

OSU could also stand for Oklahoma State, so Ohio State is abbreviated as tOSU.

I graduated from Ohio University (about 1.5 hours from tOSU) and the reason dates back to the struggle for the ohio.edu web address. After years of fighting who should have the rights to it, my school actually won the rights. This was a blow to OSU's ego, so they started to whole "the" thing to show their dominance I guess.

That's silly. Of course they shouldn't get ohio.edu. There actually is an Ohio university.

As an aside, go to northcarolina.edu. Instead of involving universities in silly squabbles, they set it up for the entire system.

The official name is "The Ohio State University". That is how university officials, staff and students (including athletes) are encouraged to refer to the school in all coorespondance, interviews and public speaking engagements.

Huh...I never knew all the NC schools were one.

Not every single university/college in NC is part of this system--mainly the public universities. It's like in California where they'll have Cal State _____ or whatever. Although not every school in this system is named UNC-(name here). But uh...yeah...I need to go to the bathroom now. brb.
