They should pay the dude. For all we know, he might have had ideas about opening an xbox-centric website for all of the various Xbox models, and XboxOne might have sounded like a cool name.

I get sort of shady feelings when big corps can sue for domain names and try to bankrupt someone who got it legitimately before them. Sure there are also plenty of squatters, which sucks as well. Maybe a solution would be to limit the maximum number of domain names any one person or corporation can have to a particular number.

Anyway, 'it should be Microsoft's regardless', .. ehh, not necessarily. Did the original guy get it legally? If so, then they need to properly compensate him, and if he wants XX dollars, that's his right to ask.

Short and sweet, but yes. They're just looking like a bunch of bullies in this case. Would have been a lot better PR management to just do the acquisition on the quiet, find out what the guy wants, and as long as it's not 'one ... beeeelion dollars', pay him off and everyone's happy.

If it was a physical thing, say a piece of land Microsoft wanted to build an office on, i'd completely agree with you.

However, the difference with a domain name is that it's not owned, it's *leased* from the domain registrar. You stop paying, it goes back in the pool for someone else to lease. And as such, you need to abide by the terms of that lease, which typically has a squatting clause buried in there these days. If the guy is clearly squatting (which is debatable), Microsoft is absolutely in the right to call him on it and file a complaint with his virtual landlord.

IF he was planning on doing something with it or has done something with it, then I'm fine with him keeping it. If it's a plan to extract money out of Microsoft (which again, would've taken a great amount of foresight), then fuck him. Just my opinion.
 
My big question about the XBOne, and by extension the PS4, is just how well they're going to support the "your only media center device" idea. They both sold the 360/PS3 as big on media center features, but local playback on both totally sucked. They each supported one or two basic containers, had no video player features beyond stop/start/pause/rewind, and just generally sucked for local or network playback. If you wanted to use them as a media box, you pretty much had to rely on a backend media server like Twonky/Plex/etc to do transcoding of everything, or re-encode your entire library to low quality big filesize crap.

It's 2013, Microsoft *OWNS* Windows Media Player and is putting a windows kernel in the XBOne. If this thing doesn't play every format and container right out of the box streamed from a network share on top of Netflix/Amazon/etc to put every Roku and WDTV to shame, frankly they're doing it wrong. A media center is more than just a device that can halfassedly stream Netflix and Hulu.

My Receiver is full up, and so is my TV stand. Microsoft and Sony aren't just trying to win real estate this time, they need to be giving me a compelling reason to be *replacing* the other devices that are already there.

Two of our most trusted neoGAF insiders have said that Microsoft is reacting hard to what has went down, and so they're going to try to dismantle PS4's image as a "for gamers" console by paying publishers and devs to not show their multiplatform titles during E3 on a PS4. In other words, even if the multiplatform version is coming out for the PS4, they won't be able to show them at E3, thus contributing to the perception that somehow Sony is getting significantly less support for PS4 than Microsoft is "for gamers."

Interesting that it mentions AA batteries, I thought they said it used an internal battery before. I'd be just as happy to keep using my Eneloops if I get one.

On the note of the 24hour thing. Deal breaker. You fanbois can buy into it. I'm not having it. My use case for consoles is not at all the same as a PC. They want to treat it like a PC? Then make it open like a PC. If I want to take my console with me to a place I don't have internet, that's MY choice.

Closed controlled systems. This is what having internet connected consoles has brought us. I'm out. That shit costs way too much to be told how to use it in such a manner that they dictate when I can use it. Apparently they don't really care at all if I actually want to play games. It's all about them being able to market to me the entire time. @!%*@ them.

Blah blah, I don't want to hear your lame excuses revolving around it and how everyone should have 300Gb connection that never goes down because you live in some big city on the moon. The people buying into this kind of stuff is exactly why we're at this point. Get over your lazy self absorbed asses and see whats really happening. Games would never have taken off if they started out the way they are headed.

having said all that, I probably wouldn't have bought it anyway. I didn't buy a 360. The point being things have taken a very anti consumer turn and anyone getting suckered into this next gen deserves everything they get in the coming years. There are so many more choices now than there used to be, no one should stand for things like this...of course, I know there's many people out there that are confused thinking "but what is the problem?". The answer is you.

After all this news on phone tapping and Internet data mining our government is doing, I'll be damned if I am going to put an advanced camera in my home. I'm sure our government is already involved in the Xbox One World Order.
