So yeah....I just got a giant watermelon from Costco and will probably proceed to eat the entire thing in one sitting. I love watermelon, plain and simple. Picking out the perfect watermelon is no easy task however. There are a lot of factors going into watermelon selection, for example:

- Seedless watermelons tend to be favored, because they are less mushy and easier to eat.
- Knocking on the watermelon is one method of checking for quality. The more hollow sounding the knock, the firmer the melon in most case. The duller the knock, the softer or mushier the melon.
- Those brown scratch marks found on some melons I have been told come from bees, and are a benchmark as to the sweetness of the melon. This is as of yet unconfirmed.

So for eating the melon, I just slice it up and go. Some people put salt on theirs. Some people ball or cube it and soak it in vodka overnight. What's your MO of melon preparation?

It's gotta be cold, for one. Just cut it and eat it. Too good to mess with putting other stuff on it.

So can anybody lend any legitimacy to the theory of the brown scratch marks on the outside of the rind? I was told the bee thing by a lady at the grocery store, and I've heard it elsewhere too.

Cut out a small hole... then poor some vodka into it. Let it sit for an hour, then pour some more vodka into it. Do this a few times over the day, then when you eat it... you get a little kick.

I've filled a bowl with vodka, and put in chunks of watermelon, honeydew, cantelope, cherries, pineapple, and what have you into the freezer for a day or so, and that comes out pretty tasty. Flavors the vodka for consumption as well. :D

Cut a small core/plug from the melon approx. the same size as a fifth of vodka, open said fifth of vodka, take a shot, upend the vodka so that the spirits are emptied into said melon, remove bottle from melon, replace core/plug, place melon in fridge for proper chilling taking care to rotate the melon regularly so the vodka does not liquify melon, remove when guests arrive, slice and serve :)

Excellent idea Moralpanic :)

As for my watermelon prep, as long as it's cold, I just cut it and eat it :)

Only if you had some lipstick to go with it!

EDIT: DIE!
