The Official SPOILER Resolution Discussion Thread

warcrow

This thread hasnt been created to spark discussion about who spoiler what for you in past threads. This is a thread about spoilers, in general, and what we can do to circumvent them for the unwanted. We're all tired of them popping up at inopportune time in an official thread that we'd like to visit despite some peoples best efforts, right? And hey, we've all probably done it, accidentally, at some point in time to someone without even being aware of it. Plus, creating a seperate thread for a game (IE:Mass Effect) to avoid spoilers is a pretty good example of the lengths people will go to to avoid them.

Since there is no way to properly mask a spoiler in these forums besides throwing up the old "**SPOILERS BELOW**" text, I'm going to propose a solution that I've seen used successfully in other (even larger) forums.

A website called WWW.ROT13.COM is used to cypher/decypher text. All you do is copy text in and out of the box on the website, hitting the Cypher" button to translate it back-and-forth.

So for instance, if I want to ask: "Who is Lukes Father?" I would take that text and copy and paste it into the text box over at ROT13.com and hit the "Cypher" button. It spits out, "Jub vf Yhxrf Sngure". I post that in the same box and it decyphers it so I can read it.

It's pretty simple.

Alternatively, if you dont want to visit the site for the translations and you're using Firefox you can get the "Leet Key" ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/770 ) add-on and map the function to a keyboard shortcut (like Alt+Shift+R), so you can highlight some text in a post (or the posting box), hit the shortcut, and watch it cypher and decypher.

Its really a great solution until the subject is officially resolved (one day?) by Fusetalk or the higher-ups on AT. I feel it would be a huge benefit for everyone in this gaming forum if we used this since we often chat about stories and many other things people might consider spoilerific.

Discuss! 🙂

I think it would be great to have something like this, but at the same time I feel that if you are really worried about spoilers, you simply should avoid threads that may potentially contain these to begin with. It's inevitable that a thread about GTA IV, for instance, is going to evolve into discussion of the missions and game. But I know that's a somewhat unreasonable 'all or nothing' approach.

What's wrong with using the ***SPOILERS BELOW*** tags (or something similar)? Those work just as well if people remember to use them. If you still read the post and spoiler then it's your own fault.

The cyphering idea is pretty clever, though, I must say.

I generally just avoid threads where there might be spoilers I don't want to see. But I have wondered why this forum doesn't have a spoliers tag to use. I like the forums where you can wrap text a spolier tag and it will block it out in one way or another... often with just a simple black box that you then have to highlight to read the text it hides. IMO, that should be standard tag in any forum software.

What doesn't work about it that ciphering or spoiler tags would solve? I realize the text is still visible, but if implemented and used properly the tags can have the same effect. I'm not against coming to some consensus, just playing devil's advocate I suppose.

EDIT: Also, someone will always forget to use whatever form of spoiler text is implemented, and although the problem may be lessened it will always be there. Not that we shouldn't try.

I'd like to see something like this implemented in fusetalk but it would be a pain in the butt to have to go to a different site to translate all the time. Also any new people that stumble in here would be completely lost. I pretty much just avoid anything that I think might end up spoiling the game.

personally i think that is more of a burden than just adding in *****SPOILER BELOW****** tag or something. it's like doing the same thing but doing it in 4 steps instead of 2.

I don't normally use it but I'll look at that later to see what it is..

Yea, but you like the bitch about everything though so your opinion holds little weight dude. 😛

I agree with purbeast0. The cypher idea is well intentioned, but you are giving the people of the Internets far too much credit. Most people are lazy, and this is just too complicated (even though it isn't really that complicated).

I like that idea. I wish it wasn't a 2nd site to go to though. Too bad we can't make the text invisable so we could just highlight it or something. I do not care for the **** SPOILERS*** tag because, I dont know about anyone else, but even if im not reading everyone at once I can still see text on the page so I might read it without trying to. I just avoid the threads now even if I want to say something, it isnt worth a spoiler

seems like my opinion is in the majority on this one.

So we just do nothing?

No, we can at least use spoiler tags. Maybe we can come up with the best way to use them. Of course, if an overwhelming majority of people are in favor of using the cypher, then I'm OK with that. I'm only one person so I can't make the decision, I'm just throwing out my opinion, trying to keep the community in mind (which often includes n00bs and lazy people 🙂).

I lurk a lot in this forum as I don't take my games quite that seriously, but it seems that in every movie thread whether it be ATOT or a movie-buff forum, a simple *** SPOILER ALERT *** works fine without jumping through a bunch of hoops and getting all techno-geeky at the same time.

Whats funny is you think > 51% of the people here are actually going to USE the cypher thing in the first place? Its going to be a handful of people who actually end up using it.

i just wanted to comment that i was thinking of the same spoiler that you used as an example and wonder if that's what most geeks use as their example.

ps - i think *** SPOILER ALERT *** seems to be an intertubes standard, at least to the considerate and initiated.

No effing way am I visiting another site or installing another memory-leaking extension in Firefox to read what you people think is too special for plain text. I'll stick to my common sense and only read threads that I'm sure won't contain spoilers for something I don't want spoiled, knowing full well that one out of ten times it will come back to bite me in the butt.

Yea, it's a bit tedious so I can understand why everyones groaning. I figured I would at least try.
