The OFFICIAL snowboarding/skiing thread..now that the SEASON is in.

I'm getting that urge as the season has begun.
Just went to Squaw today....snow was terrible but I still got to ride for 3 hrs.
Too bad I'm heading back to Florida Monday......blah.

My annual Colo trip won't be till Feb.....argh...what a long wait.

I've been going to Keystone, Colo every year for about 9 yrs now.
Don't know why except for the reason we get the same place every year and there is a great Mexican Res there(Mi Casa)
Been to briefly(as in not more than 1 week) Squaw, Heavenly, A-basin, Breck, Stowe.
Stowe is the only east resort I've been to and it was great when I was there.

I would like to spend at least a week at Whistler and Vail.

Share your experiences.....
- Where you've been.
- Where you like to go.
- Where do you recommend.
- Anything else.

Lets not do the usually snowboarding is better than skiing and vice versa.
I've done both but I just prefered to snowboard right now.

BTW...I broke my wrist last trip to Keystone "trying" to ride in the terrain park.(been watching too many X games)
But I'm eager to go back and break some more bones.

Skiings better then snowboarding. 😉

- Where have you been? Use to live in Quebec. Hit pretty much every hill in the province plus those in Northern Vermont. I've also been to Lake Louse (sp?), Sunshine (Both in Alberta), and Whistler/Blackcomb.

- Usually head up to Cypress. It a small hill just outside of Vancouver. Nice place to get away to for a few hours.

- Recommend Lake Louse, Mont Ste Annes, and Blackcomb.

- Anything else? Did I mention snowboarder suck. 😀

I may fly up to Heavenly again this year. It was great last year. Only thing that sucked was getting both my lappy & truck stolen.

Going to Fernie this year (interior BC).

Last year I got a Burton Frontier 166 for the powder. (I have a Custom 155.) Any recommendations for (strap) bindings? Boots are Burton Driver.

sucks about your truck evad.

I went to tahoe a few years back. Heavenly was the hyped place so we stayed nearby, we coordinated it with 2 other families we're friends with but pretty much did our own thing on the slopes, then hung out at night.

Let me tell you, heavenly was the worst of the 3 places we went. Sierra@tahoe was AWESOME. Such nice snow, nice lifts, nice people, didn't get skied off. Then kirkwood (I think that's what its called, slipping my mind), had HUGE snow. The only time I'd ever seen so much new snow was during blizzards in boston, and I was told that was pretty much the norm there. I got stuck in snow up to my nipples and had to hike up a hill that took like 40 minutes...on my FIRST run of the day, but it was sweet 🙂

Anyhow, I'm friggen amped for our first decent dumping here. Last year I hardly got to board cuz of varsity hockey 6 times a week and I couldn't miss a practice. This year I'm a bit more flexible 😉

BRING THE WHITE STUFF BABY, I'M READY

Don't go back to Keystone.

Nightlife: Breck and Vail.
Terrain: Vail, Winter Park (nice variety and not the crowd), Copper can be fun too (depending 100% on snow)
Snow: Wolf Creek
Experience: Vail, Telluride

Just my quick 2 cents for Colorado.

Can someone tell me the appropriate way to take a jump? (A small one.)

I'm trying to learn, and my first attempt was at the final of last winter. Landed me painfully on my tailbone. Ooooh boy did that hurt.

I was at Lake Tahoe last winter (a little before Christmas) and they had a TON of snow right before we went in. It was a lot of fun...went snowmobiling and tried out Heavenly, North Star, and Sierra. For some reason I didn't really like Heavenly...I'm going again to Lake Tahoe this year for about a week so I'll try it out again, I guess.

Went to some place in North Carolina a couple of years ago (Boone, NC), but it didn't really have good slopes and was pretty small.

I've also been to Mammoth Mountain in CA, too...I think I went there in June! It was pretty nice, but the town was kind of boring once the slopes closed.

I've been to:

Washington

Stevens Pass
Snoqualimie

Oregon

Mt. Hood Meadows
Timberline
Ski Bowl

California

Tahoe

Canada

Whistler-Blackcomb

OK

I want to learn to snowboard this year.

I have never skied before in my life.

What will I need to get / do in order to start? (I know it a very vague question but I dont have anything and no smart remarks like "find snow" please.) 😀

Thanks for your help.

That was the exact time when I last visited Sacramento.
It was the biggest dump the Tahoe area had in like "insert # of yrs".
I did take a trip to Heavenly too and I was quite disappointed.

The drive there was the freakin worst.
I had this tiny rental car and I had to put chains on.
A 1 1/2 ride turned into a 4 hr ride.
The probelm was when I finally got to Heavenly..the 1 street that leads to the Cali side was narrowed to 1 lane.
The snow was piled up like 10 feet high.
I was too damm pissed when I finnaly got there that I didn't have much fun.
And I left early the next day cause there was rumor of another storm so I didn't want to take a chance.

Heavenly was very disappointed the 2 times I've been there.

Wow, you're just jumping straight in aren't you ??
My advice is to wear plenty of buttock, elbow, and head paddings.

I was there too at that time. It was incredible. That sucks you left early, it was sooo much fun. It was funny driving on the streets with 10 feet of snow next to you.

Definitely pay for at least one lesson from the trainers they have there! It helps a lot... you don't need any expensive private lessons if you want, just the group lessons. It's really frustrating teaching someone to ski that hasn't taken a lesson to know the basic ideas 😀

Odd. That was the time I went to Tahoe also. It got dumped on, but omg was it fun. I got there in the morning right when it was starting, and when I got back... OMG where the hell did my car go?! lol.

Don't know why we keep coming back but obviously we enjoy the resort very much.
Part of the reason is that we get this same condo that is like 30 yards from the lift and for lazy people like us, its a big deal.
I guess the people I go with don't like changes.

Where I have been...

California Resorts

June Mountain (sister mountain of Mammouth Mountain, but a lot cheaper. $99 for a unlimited no restriction season pass for students!)
Bear Mountain - jumps, rails, jibs, the works all over the mountain
Snow Summit - some good free open spaces I enjoy riding on
Northstar at Tahoe - free open spaces and real snow.

Must goto Blackcomb...the trail map is enough to say wow over. I'll be at Snow Summit or Bear Mtn (dual mountain pass holder) all season starting December. I tried the Novemeber snow last year. So lame, one run, one lift.

oh yes. i did that last season as well. first jump attempt ever. there was a nice little kicker too. i went basically straight up and straight down. on my arse. oh man. i rolled away from the jump landing and cried for 5 minutes. not really, but it hurt. a lot.

try some nice gradual jumps first. bend your knees and hop straight up and down. land with knees bent. thats how i got started. as you get better, you can do it with more speed. throw in grabs. yep.

i miss snowboarding so much. bunch of friends are gonna go up for a weekend. too bad i live in fargin ontario and there are no real hills :| blue mountain is alright but its so damn far...

Yeah man....I didn't get to enjoy all that snow.
That 1 street that leads to Heavenly was just insane at that time.
I think as s0on as you turn on that street, it took another 1 hr+ just to get to the resort where it usually takes 10 mins.
I was here visit for only 1 week so I had to take off.

Oh how I would like to live here just to be a BUM for a year and enjoy Cali.

lol. Nice description, fits it well. 🙂

Yeah was in so much pain, that its impossible to get back up. I just tried to slide off to the side ASAP so that I didn't get landed on. 😛 Then I was like... I think I'm going to take a little rest right about now...

Yeah, I've never seen so much snow in my life! The fact that CTrain is comparing it to Boston snow is kind of scaring me since I'm in Boston now!

Damn you CTrain! Damn you for posting this thread. Now I want to go skiing again so badly right now that I can't wait until the end of December! 😀

Yeah I'm gone die waiting till Feb to get some real snowboarding in which is why I started this thread 😉
Actually its not helping.

My dumb@ss got too confident and thought I could actually try something like THIS
I was in so much pain that I just laid there for like 10mins.
I didn't give a damm that I was lying in the middle of the landing area.
These guys were like "hey man you got to move".
I was like "I wish I could move"

The snowboarders know about the buttocks pain.
Its something you just can't describe. You just laid there and hope it'll go away.
