THe OFFICIAL BODE MILLER IS OVERRATED THREAD

I mean, come on, at least don't disqualify in 2/5 of your events. For all the talk and hype that surrounded him, he pretty much failed to deliver on all counts.

He walked away w/ millions in endorsement deals, I wouldn't be too upset if I were him. Newsweek probably feels like a bunch of idiots since they put him on the cover 😀

That's his skiing style. Anyway, he said before the games he didn't even care if he won a medal...and even had a commercial to the effect that people shouldn't be so obsessed with winning, but the process itself.

overrated? Absolutely not. He is an amazing skier, when he cares.

yeah, ok

Have you ever watched him? Or do you base this only on his olympic performance? Overrated would imply that his skill is not what it appears, which is not the case. Bode lacks the motivation of the great skiers, but he certainly doesn't lack the physical talent and when he applies himself, he is pretty rediculous.

didn't you see all the hype surrounding him before the olympics? I don't deny he's a great skier, but compared to what he was supposed to be, he was nothing

Overhyped, yeah maybe, particularly because he has always lacked the motivation to dominate during his career.

well, motivation is a large part of what makes a great competitive skier

Blame the media. He's consistently denied any desire to medal in the olympics. Its not his fault if the media needs to choose heroes to make its money.

The main problem with Bode is that he simply doesn't know how to race conservatively - he goes all out every race, so he seems to do extremely well, or he completey falls flat on his face.

from what I've seen, when he finishes without DQ'ing or crashing he wins, but those finishes are few and far between.

So the media held a gun to his head and forced him to sign the contract for those silly Nike commercials and participate in all the pre Olympics interviews and hype? For a guy that didn't care he sure allowed himself to be shoved in our collective faces in numerous ways.

When you are theatend by the media to be hounded around every corner if you dont do interviews for them, not let you prep for races without having a ton of cameras flashing all around you or people yelling your name, i'd say the media played the biggest role in screwng him over. Did you even watch him trying to escape the cameras after some of his races? did you see him in any of his interviews and how obviously uncomfortable he was? its clear the media was houdning this guy and not letting him focus on being himself.
Look at what happend with sasha cohen, she had almost NO media attention before her short program and went out and skated her best performance ever, then she couldnt even leave her room to go for the next day practice cause she wanted to avoid the media, and then the long program falls on her ass multiple times. and then the media is on her ass the next day reliving how she "failed" even though she still got a silver.
Its pathetic how the media covers these games. They tout people and then drop them on their assess once they fail. If they do good, they focus on thier mistakes or how "rough" it was for them to get there.
