Believe it or not, this is a serious topic! :D

Whenever I buy bananas, I keep them out on my kitchen counter. However, three days after I buy them, they usually go bad and become "uneatable." I'd rather have my fresh bananas last longer (obviously), so I was wondering if keeping them in the refrigerator would help prolong their life.

Anyone?

I never refregerate them. But then again, I can buy 10 bananas and they'll be gone in three days. I love bananas, they're my favorite fruit! I usually have one w/ every meal.

I hear those hanger things work well at keeping bananas fresh longer.

Oh, and no, I keep my bananas out on the counter.

They may turn brown quicker (that's just the outside). But they won't ripen as quickly. I usually pell, puree, and add a touch a lemon juice and throw it in the freezer. I usually make shakes the the bananas so it doesn't really matter if they're over ripe or what not, but I go buy in bulk from costco and can't seem to drink that many shakes in one week. :D

the hanging things don't do anything that placing them on the counter doesn't. It's just a convient way to store banannas.

You can buy them at the grocery store, usually somewhere around the produce section. They hold a bunch of bananas hanging, supposedly this is more natural for the bananas or something. A few people I know say they work.

Mine sit on the island of my kitchen (a small counter seperated from the main one, typically in the middle between a fridge and the counter), waiting to be gobbled up. They sit, frightened, cowering in fear, seeing their buddies get snatched away effortlessly and frequently... such is the life of a banana :).

Hanging a bunch of bananas extends their life but only slightly. They tend to bruise where they rest on the counter, so hanging them prevents this. Best bet is to just eat 'em...

Once they are ripe keep them in the fridge, although the skin goes brown the fruit itself stays fresh.

Top of the fridge (I have a cat that likes them) and it's cooler up there. The other fruit stays on the counter though...

<< OMG, its the offical banana thread. finally someone came up with it :D >>

Well, I got my answer after 3 or 4 replies, so I didn't need anymore. However, people keep on replying to my initial question, so I guessed I should've widened the scope of the topic. :)

counter for sure... if u find they are browning too quickly, i suggest you buy them in a range of colors (if available) - yellow for first couple days and green for later - so they are all at the perfect stage of ripeness when u want them :)
