I hate it when I'm on-call and have to drive all the way in just to press the power button twice on a server.

maybe I'll make it home and get 2 hrs. of sleep before I get another page, probably from the Brits who either don't know or don't care that they're 5 hours ahead of me.

Sigh.

are you really busy during regular days too? Or just one of those typical server admin duties off hours?

What do you do?

I'm at work too, but it's not spooky.

same here. always on guard.

I work as a tech for at&t and if one of the switches goes down, I'd make the news and not in a good way.

Time to write a proposal to your boss about getting some equipment to remotely power the servers (ie IP-KVM).

$$$$$$$$$$$$

I'd get paid 3 hours to come in and toggle power and then leave, it would pay for itself over time (not to mention increase employee morale\productivity).

If the OP is salary and some how not getting paid to do support calls at 2 am sucks to be him.

Does it really suck to be him? I'm interested in all his other duties during the day. IT jobs like that usually mean very little regular work for a good chunk 'o change.

Shhh...there it goes again...

PEEKABOO!

Ain't not joke, back when I was on call and would go in for server problems, I'd hear all of kinds of noises and whispering noise in our building. It was FREAKY! Being a grown man, I will admit I was scared shitless at a point or two walking from our building to my truck in the parking lot.

EDIT: I found my post from 2003! Link
