the next wave of laptops

so i need to buy a laptop before i leave for a year in September. I'm planning on selling everything i've got in july/august so i'd like to purchase around then. is any new stuff slated to come out soon? i'm really wanting to buy a laptop with a cpu that has intel virtualizing support (usually the newer cores with 6mb L2) since i'll be running vmware on it for some development purposes while abroad. 4gb + ram support would be nice. i've had a hard time finding anything that takes over 4gb :/ anyways...just wondering if any big new stuff is coming out

also, if anyone has any recommendations, this is what i'm looking for:
i want to spend under $2000 after it is all said and done, but i'm planning on SSD and as much ram as i can get, so unless the laptop already has that with it i would need to add in the cost of those.

battery life isn't that important...2+ hours would be nice
i really would like a smaller laptop, but it is hard to find one with a decent video card that is under 15.4"
i'd like to do some gaming on it, maybe ut3 and spore when it comes out, but nothing too advanced, but a dedicated card is likely a must.
i'll be running some VMs from time to time to aid in development abroad, they won't be running all the time in the background, just a few vms (server08 and lamp) while testing.
would like to have 1080p + resolution for my x264 movies 😛
i'm going to ***** up an external 2tb bay so eSata would be nice but i suppose usb2.0 is ok :/

so far this is looking the best: Text
what does AT think?

Why is it so important to have SSD?

Also, the Montevina platform is supposed to drop this summer, so you can expect by the end of summer, most all the manufacturers will have them in their systems. As far as manufacturers go, and given how much you are willing to spend... i would say maybe a Lenovo, or an HP. The MacBook Pro is out of your price range, and lacks the screen resolution you want as does that Asus that you linked to. WUXGA is the resolution you are looking for apparently, and that is 1920*1200.

well, as close to 1080 as i can get... arent most high permoance laptops now like ??x1050 ?

also, want SSD because it is fast and i don't have to worry about my HDD crashing while abroad.

HDD crashing while abroad? Dont SSD have a life span also?

yah but the past 4 laptops i have owned, 3 of the OEM hdds died due to overheating or too many Gs...nothing would piss me off more than having to deal with hardware failure while i'm on the other side of the world for a year. hell shipping it back would cost $200+

Right, but new SATA platter HDDs are cheap as all get out.

Also, the vertical res isn't the issue here, but rather the horizontal. 1680*1050 is 240 pixels too narrow for 1080P (1920*1080) and 30 pixels too short. So, you are losing an 1/8th of your viewing width, which in turn will reduce your vertical to 945 pixels (assuming i did my math right, i think i did). Whereas a WUXGA screen will actually have too many vertical pixels, so you will have small black bars on the top and bottom, but you will be able to run the video at full res.

Honestly, for the cost of a single 128GB SSD, you could carry like 10 spare 200GB platter drives just in case one fails.

Larger SSD's are in the offing. 64 GB is currently the biggest offered. That is not a lot. The big pill to take is that a SSD will add about $1000 to the price of your notebook.

I don't worry about HDD crashes with my laptop. I carry a cloned spare already in caddy as insurance. Never have had to use it.

yah, i suppose SSD is a bit overkill. i will be brining a 2tb storage system with me so i suppose i could get backup exec and backup my install from time to time

Ask this question again when you have your Credit Card out and intend to purchase. No one can predict what laptops will be around in August.

IMO, look for low power 45nm c2d's on centrino platform with the newest MOBO ich... Go with a 9cell, SSD, Wireless LAN, LED backlit screen, lighter weight/portability
