First off, I'm sure there are plenty of other people who have thought about this but I'm still going to take a little credit because I don't give a crap. There might even be another thread on something like this, but I didn't see one and again...I don't give a crap.

So here's my idea...

Rockstar (aka TripleAAA productions...) presents: Grand Theft Auto Online

An mmorpg to bring you all the goodness of the GTA dynasty, but in an MMO format. Imagine immersive city environments much like we've all been used to, but with online interactive goodness. I've broken down the major components of most succesful MMO's and described how Grand Theft Auto could take a piece of this market.

Guilds=Gangs. That's right folks. Team up with your friends to conquer other gangs. Take over skyscrapers, drug houses, brothels to spread your dominance across the city.

Combat= solo or group up with friends to accomplish missions of a complex nature. Steal vehicles, boats, planes. Gain levels as you work your way through the ranks.

Transportation= Do I really need to even go here? Cars, planes, boats...all of which can transport you to rival cities.

Crafting/Specialized Skills= Imagine...choosing from specialized crafting skills such as as Chopper, Painter, Engine Modder, Drug Maker, etc.

Class: The list could go on forever...Pimp, Whore/Bitch, Thief, Thug, Driver, Dealer, Con-Artist, etc

So that's it in a nutshell. Let me know when you guys want to get working on this.

uh hu. You will know it's going to fail when your two largest rival gangs are the LP's (Linux Penguins) and the W's (Windows). All hell's gonna break loose...

Good idea, but not gonna happen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APB_(computer_game) <- Like that?

APB (All Points Bulletin) is an upcoming massively multiplayer online video game for Microsoft Windows, based in urban sprawls and featuring two sides, Enforcement and the Criminals. Players may join either the Enforcers or the Criminals, and form sub-groups in these. The game design is led by David Jones, creator of the original Grand Theft Auto and Crackdown, and is being developed by Realtime Worlds.

They have the right idea, but this one sounds more like City of Heroes/Villains. My idea would appeal more to a wider range of audience. :D

Your idea has wider appeal by only having half the choice?

Wow. Cool. So I can start off killing weak things and level up and acquire cooler gear and kill harder things until I reach the maximum level and have killed all the hardest things.

Bring it on.

Well here's the kicker. You then get to kill even harder things with 24+ closest of your friends after this is done.

Meh, isn't that the general format of most games? PVP is what keeps it interesting =)

The only way for an MMO to stay in business is if they have lots of grinding and people get addicted & stay on for years at a time.
What sort of long, slow, painful grinding will this thing have?

I think Planetside was a revolutionary concept but Sony couldn't take it to the next level. I remember I was in beta and it was crazy because their were so many people in it and we had some great battles going on. I bought the game because I thought it was fun but then as others have said, it got boring. Yeah, you win a battle but then what do you actually win? You really can't level up much. After a few months that game started to resemble a ghost town. I'm surprised Sony has still kept it going since 2003. Unfortunately as I got older, I lost my gaming interest but a good war game can get me right back into the fold.
