I've been watching The Next Iron Chef on Food Network and it seems pretty interesting - feels like a real competition. I've never heard of the contestants except for one woman ( she and someone else was up against Batali on an ep. of Iron Chef America ), and she was axed after the first episode.

The prep episode was pretty funny - some of the actually doing the work like they needed the materials ready, others speeding through - LOL at Morou who finshed with 8 minutes left and bled all over his deboned filleted salmon. And the guy who willingly picked tripe to make a savory dessert dish when there were far better things to choose. I liked having the chefs secretly pick each others' ingredients - but most of them made due with the wierd crap they got - funny how some of them couldn't even get a grill going.

Anyone know if they're adding a new chef or axing one? My guess is they're getting rid of Morimoto - he sucks anyway and hasn't been on lately.

I'm not sure they will axe a current chef, although it seems Morimoto isn't around much to compete, Flay has 2 other shows of his own, etc., maybe they just want to add new blood to the show.

I thought what the guy did with the tripe was cool though. Get rid of the smell, change the texture, deep fry it and booya.

I like who they have left. I am hoping for Symon to win. I flip-flop on Besh as does my ladyfriend... sometimes so arrogant, sometimes on the ball... but we both agree he sweats way too much for me to eat his food w/o reservations.

I watched it last night, seemed kind of stupid to me. Does it really matter if they can make a meal out of lizard toes and lawn trimmings on a bbq? I'll be skipping it in the future.

I think the show on the whole is interesting because the chefs all obviously have talent. It's something the Next Food Network Star lacked.

However, this episode was stupid. The idea was to put them in a situation that they'd never be in again, with a ridiculous set of tools, horrible ingredients picked by someone that was trying their best to make them lose, then judge the dishes without taking any of the circumstances into account.

The prissy judge on the far right was especially obnoxious.

Last night's episode was kinda cool because they filmed it at the Culinary Institute, where my wife works. It was neat to see all those places that I'm familiar with (like the herb garden outside the Caterina de Medici restaurant, and the halls of the school). Funny thing is, all the Culinary staff were told about the filming, and the producers were so hush-hush about it all... so much so that they flipped out when someone looked out the window, down into the courtyard and saw the filming... the person that looked got in trouble, which is funny because the building they were looking from is a few hundred feet away, so it's not like they knew who was doing what...

I was hoping to get a "top chef" vibe from it, but so far.. not so much. Maybe its too new, but I'm not super impressed with anyone yet.

I haven't watched last nights episode though, its still on the Tivo.
