The Next [Insert Day Here]

So, this is a topic that's surfaced two or three times for me in the past few months, and I decided I would put it up for debate on ATOT.

Let's create a scenario (yay!). Today is Monday, November 27th. If you have, say, a test on Friday, December 1st, would you say "we have a test next Friday"? This is how I would use the word "next", but a few friends of mine insist that "next Friday" means Friday, December 8th. I just wanted to see how much each view was accepted through the poll, but feel free to discuss this.

I would use "next" as meaning 12/8. If I meant 12/1, I'd say "this Friday." Dunno if I'm correct. Dunno if the usage is strict or flexible. It sure seems like people use the word differently, so if someone says "next" I always follow up with a question to get the exact date.

This [coming] Friday would refer to the 1st. Next Friday would refer to the 8th.

Doesn't mean what you're saying is technically incorrect or correct, but the area's common usage dictates my response.

SID: Well I'm going down to visit my sister in Virginia next Wednesday, for a week, so I can't park it.

JERRY: This Wednesday?

SID: No, next Wednesday, week after this Wednesday.

JERRY: But the Wednesday two days from now is the next Wednesday.

SID: If I meant this Wednesday, I would have said this Wednesday. It's the week after this Wednesday.
