according to salary.com in souther cali, the average RN makes roughly $65k a year. i have friends that can vouch for this and one who makes 6 figures 5 years out of a bachelors degree and under 30 years old..

the demand is supposedly huge and growing as we get more older folk into their death beds

anyone else thought nursing didnt make much (guilty i am)?

Effects of Nursing Shortage
The present population of nurses is aging and approaching retirement. This will compound the current shortage of nurses worldwide. The shortage of over 300,000 nurses worldwide is expected to grow to over 800,000 in the next 15-20 years.

This shortage is causing a dramatic increase in salaries for nurses.

My mother's been a nurse for her entire career (~25 years), and loves it. She started as an RN in the ER, and has stayed there ever since, with supplemental stints in management at various hospitals after earning her MBA. If you enjoy helping people (and putting up with the not-so-occasional SOB) in a very hands-on way, it's a wonderful field to look into.

Radiation Therapy too, granted the field is much smaller, but still with good opportunities and good pay.

The reason there is a shortage is because so many have left the field because oppressive working conditions. Nurses take it from every end. Overloaded with patients and doctors that are expecting evermore responsibilities to be the nurses.

Yep, there's that too. Half the nurses that start on my floor at the hospital quit within a month of starting because they can't handle it.

think of it this way, there will be a huge supply of nurses when the baby boomers start dying off. that will be around 2030 assuming they live average 80 years. you got 20-ish years of good time. :)

according to my mom (Ph.D M.D.)

nursing is great to get into...especially if you specialize (so you don't need doctor's approval or some such thing/can write prescriptions)

make quite a bit of bank

can go wherever you want to and have hospital pay for moving expenses/temp place to live/etc..

at least in next few years.

Duh! but the unglamorous bit is that they are always can be on call, work long hours, and can be very stressful!

My step mom is a dialysis nurse and some weeks she can work 40 hours in 3 days!
