I thought Chrysler had a concept car named the Phaeton. Oh well I still want one.

You are correct, sir. Chrysler Phaeton
Apparently, in the 30's, four-door convertibles in general were often referred to as "phaetons". Packard, Dodge, and Chrysler all had "Phaeton" models.
definition from dictionary.com

The car looks good, the name seems a bit odd for a VW, though.

Question: Why isn't this an Audi A6/A8??? Why is this a Volkswagen again? I thought Volkswagen was "the people's car"--i.e. for the masses. Is it just me, or does this car mark the end of European socialism and the beginning of a rich new kapitalist (with a k!) Europe?

VW and Audi are being separated more. VW and Skoda will be the "Classic" brands, whereas Audi and Seat will be the "Sport" brands. Classic-brands and Sport-brands are not going to share as much components between them as they are today, so they will have more distinct looks. That's evident even today: Skoda Octavia has the interior of VW Golf/Bora, whereas Seat Toledo/Leon has the interior of Audi A3.

Looks like they are changing their image.

It's a wonderful looking car, and I'm an avid VW fan, but I think their new market strategy is going to bomb. Sport/luxury (Audi) and Classic/luxury shouldn't need to be two seperate brands. Not enough differentiation.

It's a nice vehicle, but VW isn't going to shake off their "lower" status anytime soon. I hardly see people trading in their Audi A8, Mercedes S-Class, or BMW 7-Series just because VW has decided to step up.

It just doesn't work that way.

<< Very cool. Nice car and awesome factory. I'd like to take a tour of the factory! :D >>

Me too. It's built by the same people who designed the Autostadt which is a kind of volkswagen theme park. Another place I'd like to visit.
