Im sure most of you have heard about the new www.google.com and its upcoming features. It has already branched off into froogle, which sells stuff, and they will soon be offering email addressed, and selling stock on the market. What do you guys think about this, do you think that a search engine has these capabilites they claim?

Seriously though, I like Yahoo! better for directory browsing. And my homepage is my.yahoo.com...Google doesn't really have a my.google.com portal...yet...

ok, good, I know there are many Yahoo!ers out there, but as far as i know, i think yahoo is ranked #1 most visited site, and google is #2, but yahoo offers things that google will soon offer, so things may change....
i believe that too, have you read about the main server google uses?? Its crazy, theres guys running around with 500 gb Hard drives to replace the 100's that burn out a day... at least that what i think i read

What do you mean "SOON will be offering e-mail addresses"? Their Gmail service is already in beta, and lots people on this forum already have an account! Also, don't forget that Google also owns Orkut, which has some really cool discussion forums.
Google has realized they have to diversify if they want to be lasting business; several years ago they swore they wouldn't go that route, but now they realize that Yahoo does indeed have the ideal model from a business perspective.
Google's search engine got them to where they are today. It's helped them build a huge traffic base of loyal users and a large network of partners distributing their search results. This in turn has helped them draw millions in advertising dollars (which is where 95% of their revenue comes from.) But their search engine is no longer head and shoulders above the competition and they (and anyone who's gotten over the Google glow from their glory days 2-3 years ago) know this. If some new engine comes along that offers dramatically better results Google could see its revenue erode rapidly if all they have to offer is a search engine. This is why they're diversifying into other areas such as e-mail, portal personalization, shopping, dating/friend networking etc. Just like Yahoo, this gives them other 'hooks' to keep people using them to create new sources of revenue and to help them survive any new challengers.
I'm one of those who's already got a Gmail account. It's nice to have, but I won't be ditching my Yahoo e-mail or personalized data over there just because I've got gobs of space I'll probably never use. I think Yahoo is a great site with highly useful content and their new search engine is easily comprable to Google's IMO. I'll continue to use both sites heavily and won't ever abandon either fully.
