It appears that the 2003 Cobra will be getting major engine changes that will net 418 HP at the flywheel. An article in MM&FF has states they are going to accomplish this by upgrading the internal components and flowing the heads to some astrinomical amount that can only be understood by the most in tuned of car enthusiasts. The article states that with the installation of the optional factory installed NOS kit (that comes with a full 60,000 mile warranty) the car should make short work of all heavily modified Camaro's and C-5 corvettes.

Bummer for guys doing any aftermarket that need any tuning done for them, But hey Stangs will finally gain back the "Off the Lot" Power they have lacked with the coming of the heavy SN95.

NOS From the factory? Highly doubtfully. I'll beleive that when I see it.

This is a top of the line sports car, what makes you doubt it?

<< Factory squeeze? I hope there is a training course for the buyers. >>

They're spending like what, over 50 grand here? I think they know what they're getting into :D

mmmm....sounds good!!!

I think they really need to get rid of the V6 option in a Mustang though! It just doesn't sound right. And why do people argue about the current bodystyle of the Mustang?? It sure looks better than the Mustang of the 80s and early 90s! I think it looks aggresive from the front!

Also, the Team Mustang people said that the modular 4.6L was at its performance peak without sacrificing reliability. That doesn't sound right. I'm pretty sure they can get more than 260hp from a 4.6L V8 and still have rock-solid reliability!

The newest styling for the Mustang has got to go. I prefer the more rounded late 90's look. A guy here at work has a 98(i think) SVT cobra and it looks nice.

The V-6 mustang is there to sell. Women and guys who need the attention buy them.

These are the Power number's planned, looks like nothin to the LX and the GT, I mean that 25hp will be nice on the GT, but the big thing will be the Cobra getting a 5.0 :)

4.0 SOHC
210@5250
240@3250

4.6 SOHC GT
285@5250
310@4000

5.0 Cobra
350+@6000
340+@4750

Considering the old Fox bodies had pussy engines (2.3L 4 cylinder), the current V6 ain't too bad. (It's on par with the 3800V6 in the Camaro/Firebird)

Ford just needs to cut loose the Cobra power wise..regardless of the engine

Ford's bringing back an OHC version of the 351 or 429 in 2003! Trust me.

Not necessary. Ford had a SOHC 427 back in the mid 60's. It was never offerred in cars, but could be bought as a crate motor from Ford for racing use. There were 2 configurations: one had a single 4 bbl and other one had 2. Both made over 600 hp.

Oooooo, after a quick search I found some nice info about these engines: http://www.geocities.com/infieldg/v8sohc427.html

Oops, it's Geocities, so you have to cut and paste, but you guys know the drill, right?

I think those 427s were meant primarily for racing, not something Ford would put in 50,000 production muscle cars of the modern era. 600hp@7500 doesn't sound like it would last long. :)
But the new ones will be FI/computer controlled(more reliable). If GM is bringing a 6.0 out, Ford will need to at least keep up with that (5.7 at the least), to keep up. They even said, they could produce 400+ with the 4.6, but it's not feasible over the long term. The only way they'll catch GM's hp numbers is with displacement. I would guess a 5.7 at the least. :)
