Wow, it seems that they basically took a 9600GT and crippled it. What is the point of this card other than to confuse more people? I mean they could have at least picked a new name when the original 9600gso has 2x the shaders.

I can see where the 512mb 256bit ram can make a difference but the shaders would take away any improvement.

So Nvidia are still trying to confuse us. Not only was it enough to rebadge the 8800GS as a 9600GSO, but now they are going to have 2 different 9600GSOs!

Is this PNY GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB card of the same ilk (handicapped, as you note)?

How about this one (which I own and was $35 a couple of months ago)?

Thanks! I'd look them up, but PNY's site is down, and EVGA doesn't even LIST that second card on their site anymore.

Edit: Ahh..I see from Newegg's Specs that my card (the second one) has less memory (384 vs 512), more stream processors (96 vs 48), slower core clock (550 vs 650), and smaller memory interface (192 vs 256), than the Zotac that's been referenced.

It's hard to find specs on the 768 MB PNY card I referenced, but it looks like it's 192-bit and 575 MHz core.

If the GSO has 512mb or 1024mb of ram, it is most likely the new crappier version. If it has 384 or 768mb of ram then it is the better older version. This is due to the fact of the memory bus being either 192bits or 256 bit.

nvidia needs to fire whoever is in charge of card names ASAP 😕

They've been doing it for years now.

The whole G92 generation should have been the "9" series cards -- 8800GT shouldn't have been released under that name, and 8800GTS (320/640MB or 512MB?) was the reverse of what they're doing this time around -- better performance under the same name (where in this case the 9600GSO is being neutered).

If they had been smart about it, we would have had:
G80 - 8800GTS / 8800GTX / 8800 Ultra
G92 - 9800GT / 9800GTS / 9800GTX
G94 - 9600GSO / 9600GT

But I suppose that would have made too much sense for the marketing guys to accept.
