There are very, very few times that it is appropriate to argue with a customer. This was not one of them.

I agree with you but I am curious. When do you think it is appropriate to argue with a customer?

I can't think of one off-hand, but I'm sure there has to be a couple of instances where it has to be done.

I've got one... I used to work in a retail store that sold furniture (among other things). This guy bought a recliner, chose not to have it delivered, and also chose to load and secure it in his truck by himself. On the way home (on the highway, mind you) it flies out the back of his truck. He came back with what was left and demanded an exchange. 😕

we've had people damage tables while putting them together and we exchange.

thats so gross.
I am very confused.

Do you throw away all your dishes after one use? 🙂

Why couldn't you have just washed them, like you do with normal dishes?

Do you bring your own dishes with you to all you can eat buffets? 😛

Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean or anything.. your comment just struck me off guard..

would you buy glasses if you knew someone else had purchased them and drank out of them previously?

would you buy a shirt if you knew someone had worn it, not washed it and brought it back?

edit: its different if you work in a second hand store, but when someone comes into my place of business they expect the product to be new and to be in perfect condition. they are paying a lot for the merchandise.

it more grossed me out because they were still dirty and she (the customer) just expected us to take them back and put them on the shelf like that.

they are such nice glasses too. mikasa crystal ones.

I was about to ask the same thing. 😕 Is it really unethical? If so, do restaurants do injustice when they reuse glasses and dishes? 😕

It may not be in agreement with the policy of the business, but I wouldn't say it's such unethical thing to do. As Roger said, it's certainly better than returning used underwears.

i think its unethical to use something once and take it back to a store. we don't rent glasses, we sell them.

Yes, I agree with you there. Whether they really didn't like them, or they just wanted to use them once for a special occasion and then return them, you'll never know..

But you should generally just assume the best. I would have no problem thoroughly washing returned glasses and putting them back on the shelf, as long as they had no visable damage.

If they're just going in the garbage, you may as well fish them out and take them home for yourself. I really don't see why you can't put them back on the shelf though, as long as they aren't damaged.. I am sure they are washed at the factory, or some point before they get to your store. Just consider them extra clean. 😉

If it's against store policy then thats another matter. I'd just take them home.

^^they are going on the ncv (no cash value) shelf, one of the employees will have a chance to buy them cheaper.

my boss was so angry.

^^unused merchandise can be returned.

Unused merchandise can be returned does not mean that used merchandise cannot be returned.

Even so, it's gross and the person that returned them is trashy.
