The nerve of hurricane Isabel

I had an appointment this morning, so I hit the road early. After getting out on the highway, I realized that the traffic lights were not working and power was out for a large number of stores and residences. I drove by 3 or 4 7-11 stores and they were all dark. No coffee for me. :( Finally, after about 12 miles of driving, there was one 7-11 store with power. Two of the coffee brewers were down and the 7-11 employee was "stationed" at the 2 remaining coffee brewers to keep them going. The lines were 10 deep and she was holding cups under the brewer so people could get their coffee immediately. Then, the checkout lane was about 15 people deep.

The message of my story?? It's amazing what we take for granted in our daily lives. I'm very thankful that my family and myself are all fine though this hurricane mess. We lost a small piece of vinyl trim on our house (no biggie) but lots of people have trees that have fallen over and even some trees that have crushed cars and even more people without power ... which could last several days.

Oh, and the irony ... after I got back in my car with my hot cup of coffee, there was a report on the radio indicating that all county residents where I reside should boil their water because the treatment plant had experienced power outages. Well, after all that work to get a fresh cup of coffee, I thought I'd enjoy it ... bacteria and all.

Take care, folks ... be safe out there.

Well, i'm glad your safe, but I am actually rather suprised at all the hype there was over all of this. Only 8 people out of the hundreds of the people that went outside during the storm were killed. I think thats a pretty decent ratio. Some tree's were blown over, ect ect (we had that happen here with a normal storm)

I'm not trying to lighten this up any, some flooding occurred which probably has destroyed several homes. I'm just sorta suprised that people were so worried about this. Now i understand why when people come here from the North they freak out over Tornado watches.

I am the only one in the downtown area of Durham with power. All my friends are converging on my house to use my refrigerator to house their food/frozen stuff. A friend who works from home is going to use my DSL to get on-line. Other than that, I had some wind damage to some plants in the garden and I can't find my pet spider, a writer spider (known as an Argiope).

I am having a picnic in my garden at lunch for everyone today. So it wasn't bad for me at all and I think my friends are doing all right.

EDIT: I am worried about my folks' new condo they just bought in Williamsburg. The realtor is checking on it this morning as going to report back. I am concerned about the flooding and the unfished condos acroos the street from them.

I always keep a power inverter in my car so I always have power even when it's out. :p

All I'd need to do is get my 4 cup coffee pot, some water in a thermos and I can make coffee anywhere. It's not so much that everyone takes stuff for granted...they're just not always prepared. That's my boy scout speech for the day. Thanks for listening. :)

Hope the condo is ok. Our power did not go out(I am surprised) But it did flicker alot and we had a couple of spikes(enough to kill a power supply through a surge protector)
