Ok guys, I'm getting kind of desperate for a quality 19 inch monitor here.

I recently bought a Samsung 997DF for $200 at Best Buy, and while its not horrible, its clearly no match for my 6 year old Sony Trinitron 17 inch monitor.

So I'm returning the monitor tommorow to recoup that $200, and am once again looking at more 19 inch monitors. I'm also willing to spend up to $300 if I have to, to make sure it's a good one.

I simply want a monitor that is as sharp, clear, crisp, and vibrant as my old 17 inch Sony, except in 19 inch form.
It seems the most heavily recommend, and indeed comprabale to the Trinitron, is the NEC "Diamondtron" series. The one I specifically have my eye on, is THIS ONE, the NEC FE991SB for $249 at newegg.
I've searched this and the video forum for threads with that model number, and haven't found any, so i thought I'd ask here in a new thread.

Quite simply, is this a very good 19 inch CRT? Will this rival (or even surpass) the quality of my old Sony? Is it better than the disappointing 997DF i just bought?
And finally, how much difference does the apeture grille make over the shadow mask (the samsung is a shadow mask, the trintron is a AG, so I'm really leaning towards AG now.)

Thanks for any and all replies guys! :)

Thanks for the reply! Please keep 'em coming! :)

I was also looking at that monitor as well. Is it worth the extra $50 or so? I really want the best 19 inch CRT in that price range, but am also not necassarily looking for the most expensive. Do you feel its worth the extra money?

Also, Amazon.com has the same monitor for $300 and FREE SHIPPING, which is a big plus since shipping would easily be another $25. Do you think Amazon would be a good place to get it from?

It is completely worth the $50. This is the best monitor out there. A Trinitron tube, full aperture grill, .24 dp. When you compare it to the 997df, the performance of this monitor will completely justify the cost. I'm sure if you ask around you will find that the consensus is that this is the best 19" crt on the market.

Hmmm...thanks, I'll definetly keep it in mind. I really do NOT want to skimp this time on the monitor, but I do only have a limited budget to work with, with a max of around $300. This would pretty much clean me out, but hey, if its worth it than its worth it.

I'll ask around a few other forums as well and see if this thread gets any more responses before making up my mind, but thanks for throwing another quality suggestion into the mix. :0

P.S. What exactly makes the DP930SP $50 better than the FE991SB?

the 991's dot pitch varies from .25 to .27 at the corners of the screen, it has lower refresh ratings, it is not that great basicly just like the viewsonic p95f+ Try checking out the 930sb at a computer store and compare it to their other monitors. That should sell you on it.

this is THE best 19" display (yes I have one and am blowing its horn) This is by far the best gaming display availible for the computer, apart from the 22" model of course :)

I second that:D! Excellent value and the display is great and not much difference in price with the FE991SB.

Good luck in finding the monitor you want/need.

Yeah, I'd love to check out these monitors myself in stores, but it seems all the brick and mortar places around here (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, etc) all seem to be getting rid of their CRT monitors, and the few they do have left are usually only 1 or 2 models or brands (usually Viewsonic or Samsung).

So I'm really relying on the members here and other places to give me some good, solid advice here. ;)

The mitsubishi uses a Mitsubishi Diamondtron tube, not a Sony Trinitron tube.

The diamondtron tube is the same technology as the sony trinitron tube. It is based on the same principle, hence the two tell-tale lines on a white screen, we all associate with a trinitron monitor. Sulaco, btw just go on google and search for 19" crt monitor reviews. Any review you find with the 930sb in it, it will come out on top, anand recommends the 22" version for their ultimate system.

Yep, and SharkyExtreme.com recommends the monitor you suggested with their "High End PC buers guide" this month.
Definetly leaning heavily towards the 930sb now. :)

My Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 22" CRT rules.Hands down the best CRT I've ever owned and have seen yet.LCD's need not even try to apply against this beast.

I somewhat recently (~3 months) replaced an old NEC 17" with the above-linked monitor in the 19" flavor, and I'm iffy on it... The first problem I've had is ridiculous eyestrain. I never experienced this with my old 17", and I'm at my pc a lot. Second problem I've encountered is that there's too much of a disparity between light & dark colors. If I crank the brightness enough to see fine detail in very dark shades, especially gray & brown, any bright colors, especially white, are near-blinding, and vice versa. This holds true for web browsing, picture viewing, and gaming, though less so in games. Overall I wouldn't say I'm unhappy, but I never considered an LCD (I felt they were too expensive and the technology too new, ie. I hear about dead pixels, burn-in, and ghosting too often) until I got this monitor. I've toyed with all of the settings, that's not the culprit.

This http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=24-002-012&depa=0 is the best CRT currently available on the market. No eyestrains with this puppy. And plenty of real estate.Good geometry, colors, brightness. There is nothing bad to say about it at all. With CRT's slowly becoming a dying breed,I'd dare say it may go down as the CRT ever made one day, unless of course it get's an improvement. It's gonna be a long time before LCD's can even begin comparing to this beauty.

The 991 is an excellent monitor, the mit 930 is a super excellent monitor. Basically for 50 bucks you are getting .24 dp, a true flat screen (diamondtron natural flat vs. diamontron stock tube) most "flat screens " are not flat. They have a slightly curved tube with a flat plane of glass in front of the tube, the u-nx gun which is a new 1 gun focusing system which produces sharper text and focus compared to the standard 3 gun used in other trinitron tube monitors and the 991. My advice is if you can afford it, it is well worth the price difference. If you can't afford 50 more bucks then definately get the 991.
