What is this? They sent me a letter saying that I have been nominated for membership. Should I join? I will take a picture of the letter later when I get batteries fo rmy camera.

Looks like just another vanity "honor society" that rakes in big bucks from people hoping it will look good on their resume. I was inducted into one of these as an undergrad based only on having a high GPA / being on the Dean's List every semester -- they didn't know anything else about me in deciding to "honor" me with membership.

It's similar to the "who's who" scams where the point it to sell you and your proud copies of the book with your listing in it. I was in one of those too, woohoo!

BTW these don't help on your resume, but if you're suffering pains from an overstuffed wallet they can help with that.

I used to get a lot of these when I was in college. I joined one when I was a freshman, Golden Key Honor Society or something like that. Anyway, I sent them like $60, got a little certificate, and never heard anything from them again. After that I was wary and didn't join anything else, even the ones that I probably should have. True, they're not really needed for your resume, but some of them can give you added credibility in the real world later on. The trick is to just make sure you research the ones that are relevant to your field or major and think about joining some of those, the others can be skipped. Other than that... You got noticed, so you're doing something right. :) Keep up the good work!

It's largely resume padding, but they also do some good stuff. They do a lot of volunteer work with the local elementary schools here at Pitt.

Don't join any of these things unless it is supported by your school. The only club I joined as an undergrad was Beta Gamma Sigma and I don't know if I should have joined.

I'm at least glad I didn't fall for the Golden Key club one that wanted me to join.
