Decide to ask about this one, as it is playoffs/world series season, and this question is therefore somewhat a current event.....
What's the deal with having a soloist sing the National Anthem at sporting events? Especially when these soloists almost always try to focus the attention on themselves rather than where it belongs..... on the Anthem, it's meaning, and why we sing it....
When I was growing up, while I was in the military, and for me today, tomorrow, and forever.... I consider(ed) it an honor, priviledge, and a duty to stand facing our Flag and to sing the National Anthem. When I sing it, and see that flag waving in the breeze.... think about what it all means, what had to happen, and the hardship/sacrifice that so many went through to give me the priviledge of standing there and singing.... I mean, it really gets to me.
It also makes me angry when I see the soloist trying to make it all about them.... or people not singing along... or failing to stand (much less facing the flag or saluting (hand over heart).... or worse.... horse-playing, talking, or otherwise acting like a jackass....
It's only a short song, and a few moments of attention.... it takes so little effort to render a little respect to the country that has made it possible for you to live with so much comfort, safety, and freedom. It's a priviledge to be an American....
I just don't understand....
