The National Anthem....

Decide to ask about this one, as it is playoffs/world series season, and this question is therefore somewhat a current event.....

What's the deal with having a soloist sing the National Anthem at sporting events? Especially when these soloists almost always try to focus the attention on themselves rather than where it belongs..... on the Anthem, it's meaning, and why we sing it....

When I was growing up, while I was in the military, and for me today, tomorrow, and forever.... I consider(ed) it an honor, priviledge, and a duty to stand facing our Flag and to sing the National Anthem. When I sing it, and see that flag waving in the breeze.... think about what it all means, what had to happen, and the hardship/sacrifice that so many went through to give me the priviledge of standing there and singing.... I mean, it really gets to me.

It also makes me angry when I see the soloist trying to make it all about them.... or people not singing along... or failing to stand (much less facing the flag or saluting (hand over heart).... or worse.... horse-playing, talking, or otherwise acting like a jackass....

It's only a short song, and a few moments of attention.... it takes so little effort to render a little respect to the country that has made it possible for you to live with so much comfort, safety, and freedom. It's a priviledge to be an American....

I just don't understand....

I hate it when people sing it and alter the rhythm, melody or even the words. Seems to happen a lot more in the US than in Canada for some reason. The singing here is a lot more uniform (hehe, another stanker pun tonight :p).

Hymn 43 (Jethro Tull, great song)

I don't consider the "small stuff" as you describe it to BE small stuff. Ever heard "The Devil is in the details."? Not a religious reference. It means that attention to detail makes it much easier to make the "big stuff" go smoothly.

OK, RD... YOU pick a topic... :D I can assure you, I'll discuss it with you. As you know by now, I am...

It's simply a matter a respect is all....

Singing it all together is a way to "show team spirit" for the Big Team. :)

I guess I'm just "old-fashioned" when it comes to things like this.... Of course, I'm quite a bit younger than you Red.... ;)

I usually don't like it when a performer tries to mess with the anthem too much, but I did love Marvin Gaye's version at that one NBA All-Star game.

It is, always has been, and always will be, my favorite song. Period. It is the most powerful and emotionally impactful group of words ever written.

On that note, Roseanne Barr should be tried for Treason.

Red,

I think you know Russ was going for little dramatic effect through exaggeration. Of course she shouldn't be tried for treason for what she did to the Anthem....

.... she should be publicly flogged and vocal chords extracted with a pair of pliers....

j/k by the way.... ;)

It also bugs me when they change the tempo, etc of the song. However if done well, I really enjoy a beautiful voice singing the national anthem. It's a beautiful song.

<< Russ doesn't worry what I say. >>

To the contrary, I hang on your every utterance and your words have a deep affect upon my emotional wellbeing.

I think it is fine if a musician puts some personal inflections in the piece IF it is within reason. Like if Whitney Housten wants to blues it up that is fine. But if Roseanne wants to scream it, then, well that is a problem.
