All the talk about martial arts before made me question the movie The Karate Kid. Would sand-da-flo' and paint-da-fens condition someone properly?

Well, here's the thing:

It seems because of that statement that repetitive movements like sanding, painting, and of course waxing would help train muscle memory. No?

Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) studied karate for a total of 6 months before shooting that film so it should tell you something.

I have co-workers that are martial arts nuts and one of them brought that up in discussion.

In my view, it's similar to making those learning the piano practice scales and arpeggios.

I try to make my students practice small exercises repeatedly until they can play them perfectly. If someone can play all my exercises well then it'll make learning a Mozart Sonata much easier. A lot of those elements will appearn the course of the piece and give some familiar territory to work with.

Whether it actually works in karate is another question entirely but in music it certainly does!

Just because an actor only studied for 6 months ahead of time, doesnt mean that the script wasnt a legit method of teaching. It's not like Morita penned the story or that the writers didnt research.

I took goju ru ninjitsu for 2 years, I'd have to say no. We practiced by pounding a water bag for hours. Then pounded each other.

The sensei was trained/grew up in Tailand until he was 26, some of the stories he shared were just crazy.

I made a thread the other day about how my son recently saw the movie and has been doing stuff from the movie.

The other day we were sitting on the couch and I mentioned that my foot hurt. He stood, clapped his hands together, rubbed them back and forth really fast, then put his hands on my ankle. Just like Mr. Miyagi

It didn't really work, but I told him it did :). He thought it was so cool.
