The mother of all sinkholes

Though the oil field service company that owns the site where the cavern is located contends the land is stable, local officials declared a state of emergency Thursday in a bid to free up state and federal funds. "It would be like a bomb going off in the middle of town," said Jim Griswold, a hydrologist with the New Mexico Oil Conservation Division, about the potential collapse. Here, a brine well that collapsed near Artesia, N.M., last year is shown.

Real estate prices in that area must be.....sinking rapidly.

"US 285 south subject to sinkhole 1,000 feet ahead," motorists are warned.

"Just so you guys know, if you drive on this road, there's a chance you might all suddenly find yourselves in freefall toward a watery grave. But we're not closing the road just yet."
Problem solved.

And I&W Trucking of course contends it's not at fault. "We dug a massive fucking cavern in the ground. Not our problem."

That's the first time I've ever seen my home town mentioned on a forum. I remember when that one fell in. And just a few weeks later, another one about ten miles northeast of it fell in. Is it bad when a hole in the ground is the most interesting thing to happen in your area for, oh, three or four years?

Yep. Gone for seven years, then BAM, just like a magnet. Notice how desolate looking it is right around the hole? That's pretty much how it looks everywhere. Sand, mesquite, and greasewood. And oil wells. Lots of oil wells. To the south, potash mines.

edit: This one fell about a year and a half ago.

On what basis are they contending that the land is stable?

And very cool pic.
