Which cities and states are the most profane? Daniel Huffman decided to find out for himself, and to share the results in convenient heat-map form. And it looks like the Southeast needs to wash its mouth out with soap.

Huffman based his research on geotagged tweets between March and April of 2010. That means a smallish sample size, sure, but you can't really argue with the black hole of cussin that swallows up Salt Lake City. But what four-letter words were counted, and how? According to Huffman:

I made use of six main swears] that came to mind: fuck, shit, bitch, hell, damn, ass
I was running these through Excel (since I had the Tweet data in a spreadsheet), and I had it simply search for those text strings within the message. In most cases, that meant it was a search along the lines of *fuck*, meaning it would catch "fucker," "fuckwit," and other words probably bandied about the UW Cartography Lab in its saltier days. For ass and hell, I kept wildcards out of those words, since there was a chance of catching something like "assume" or "shell" if I did not.

Interesting stuff! Not sure how accurate it is, what do you guys think? Also. Are the words Damn/ Hell really considered swearing you live?!

Damn and Hell are considered really minor swear words. They say them on TV pretty often. They can say "ass" on TV too, but sometimes they bleep it out (I think it depends on the time of day).

They do, however, bleep out "goddamn," and many times they bleep out the "god" part. Similarly with "asshole," they actually bleep out the "hole." Whatever.

The only people who really don't say damn and hell are children and very religious people. I know someone who says shit and fuck all the time but refuses to say damn, hell, Jesus/God, etc. because it's sinful.

Another thing; isn't "bloody" considered pretty serious in England? Like you can't just get on TV and say "bloody this bloody that." In the US, a lot of people don't know that and think it's a minor swear that they can use to sound more English.

On Top Gear, they're always using the word "cock," but that would totally get bleeped out if it was the US since it pretty much exclusively means penis. When Jeremy Clarkson or James May says it, it sounds like they're using it the same way an American would say "oh hell."

Bloody is what your grandad says over here, you can say arse, cock, hell, damn etc on TV over here because they aren't considered swearing, However if you want to say fuck shit etc then you need to wait until 8 o clock or after.

NJ/NY no contest. I used to work for Ameritrade and we had a huge client base in the NJ area from a company that they bought out. We'd all cringe whenever a New Jersey area code came across as an incoming call. We knew we'd be in for a ride of profanity, anger and just pure assholishness.

Doesn't ass just mean donkey? IE a stubborn and stupid person. Why would that be bleeped out?

I suppose its not particularly polite but I wouldnt call it swearing.

Bloody is a very mild form of swearing over here, and its not always swearing. My 5 year old son has been learning about Bloody Mary at school.

They really bleep out god over there?

What a piece of shit. Map has the worst fucking color range. Someone should bitchslap the hell out of the asshole that made that.

😛

ass = ruder form of butt. It's not bleeped out that often. They say it on the Simpsons for instance. Asshole is always bleeped but they usually do "ass****" for whatever reason instead of "***hole."

Wasn't sure on the status of bloody. It's only ever used in the US when someone wants to sound British. So maybe it's not so bad.

"God" is only bleeped out sometimes and only when it's part of the word "goddamn."

I used to watch more TV when I was in high school but I don't watch much anymore so I don't have the best sense of what is said and what isn't.

You guys need a sleeper cell of normal people inside the governing body that censors this stuff. Some people who can go in pretending to be uptight anuses but actually plan to make swearing ok on TV, then when the have attained high enough ranks they can strike! Call them selves: The Land of The Free Fighters or TLOTFF. Just an idea.
