The trouble started back in the late 19th century when Poveglia served as a checkpoint for ships going to Venice. After a pair of ships carrying plague victims arrived in 1793, the island was sealed off and turned into a quarantine zone for people with infectious diseases, a role it served for over a century. It goes without saying that many of these people died on the island during this time, leading to the widespread belief that Poveglia is haunted. It didn't help when the place was converted into a hospital for the mentally ill in 1922. Rumor has it, the hospital was home to a number of crude lobotomies, performed by a doctor who'd been driven mad by the ghosts. He later flung himself off the bell tower.

I have heard of this place a looooooong time ago on TV and I have always wanted Ghost Hunters International to go there and check it out.

those shows are s worthless.

you never see anything. if you did it would be world-wide news. the people always claim to see something but never get it on camera - its always when the camera guy is conveniently looking in the opposite direction.

they always hear sounds but i'd bet it's their crew doing it. the setup is just so convenient for that to be the case.

I am not particularly a believer in haunting, but I also think one has to be incredibly arrogant and short-sighted to ignore it as at least a possibility. I certainly would not be comfortable living somewhere where many many people had died in pain.

I don't find it arrogant or shortsighted, unless it's arrogant and shortsighted not to consider absolutely everything a possibility. That is, invisible unicorns, etc. IF it's a possibility, then it defies a lot of laws of physics, especially those concerning energy and matter.
