is that it runs better with 2 dims that 3! I bought 3 256 meg PC2100 sticks, and from the Aces review, it seems to me that there is a 9% decrease in speed in going from 2 dims to 3! How lame is that. The Nforce runs better with 512 megs of ram than it would with 768 megs!

Someone, tell me if I am wrong, I don't think I am.

thanks for making a post that had absolutely nothing to do with mine, and wasn't helpful at all.

AaronP, where did you read this information. If you can quote Ace's, then I'll believe it.

I'm too lazy to go look at the article yet again. ;)

I think that's fairly common for reduced performance with extra ram above 2 dimms. Some MB's require you to use registered ram if you use more than 2 DIMMs, and that's slightly slower that regular ram. Other boards limit the ram to less agressive timings if you have more than 2 DIMMs.

IIRC, on my 8KHA+, I'm pretty sure the manual stated that CAS is limited to 2.5 if you have 3 DIMMs, (but I'm not sure now if I saw it there or in a review of another MB and I don't have the manual with me to check now - sorry)

Time to start calling it Nfarce again. LOL

It's their first time making a chipset,it was bound to be buggy at first.

give them time and i am sure in a few new chipset revisions it should be better.

bottom line is dont buy Nfarce now or the joke will be on you.:)

The TwinBank architecture only works with 2 DIMMs. I don't see why that's such a big deal. A lot of boards today still only have 2 DIMM slots. The reason why performance decreases when you drop in the 3rd DIMM is because it is unable to create two separate channels. You could use 2 512MB PC2100 modules.

Nvidia said from the get-go that the benefit from using the dual-channel architecture would come greatest when both channels were inhabited with the same speed and SIZE of memory. That means a 256mb stick in dimm 1 and a 128mb stick in dimms 2 and 3, or other sizes that match equally.

Well

aces ran 2 tests with different memory setups. Both tested just the memory sub systems. in one it lost about 1%, in the other 9%. Both memory configs on nforce were better than the kt266a + athlon XP. At best i would call this inconclusive.

Well said.. Whats with this "releasing" a chip in june and no mobos four months later? I really needed this baord today when I bought a system for my bro... but no I had to buy video card, santacruz, NIC, modem and the MB. Next dowload drivers (lots of em) assemble and support this for a guy who surfs the net... This is waiting is getting old.

The 3rd DDR slot is shard by both channels, and effectively deactivates twinbank

Have a linky for this????
"The 3rd DDR slot is shard by both channels, and effectively deactivates twinbank"

The first dimm is on one 64bit channel and dimms 2 and 3 are on another 64bit channel. How do you figure that the third slot can share both channels if it's not connected to it?

The problem I think with all slots filled is that the testing was done with 3 128mb dimms. It should have been done with one 256mb stick in channel 1 and two 128mb sticks, one each in 2 and 3.
