no excuse! we all pretty much grew up eating KFC and preferred it, as with many things. It doesn't intrinsically prevent you from being exposed to a better thing later, and having no choice but to change your mind because the superior thing is clearly superior to childhood tradition.
you know, when i was a kid, say, 14yo, i used to think Red Lobster was heaven. (granted, this Red Lobster was in Long Island so maybe they had access to better lobster than you'd get in the City) But apparently, everyone hates Red Lobster with a passion.
Now i dont know if it was that i was a kid, and thus misjudged the quality of food i was eating (mind you, this was before the invention of curly fries .. a period of barbarism, basically the dark ages, 1986), or if it was better then but got worse now, but if you told me today to go to a RL i'd go threre running, just because of how i remember it.

Yeah, how did guys eat before the microwave?

Well, I’m old enough to remember life before the microwave. I remember my mom and dad buying one in the early 80s and being completely blown away at how fast everything cooked. However, those memories have faded:

1983: “I can’t believe I cooked this hot dog in 1 minute!!!!! That’s amazing!!!!!”
2019: “Hurry the hell up! I can’t believe I have to wait 1 minute for a hot dog!!! Is this 1884?!?!?!?!”

Chain restaurants have gotten worse in the last 30+ years. I can remember when Subway was actually good and in high school, Dominos’s pizza was much higher quality than it is now. It’s likely because of lower-quality ingredients due to cost cutting. I remember paying more for a fully loaded Domino’s pizza in 1988 than I do today, and the 1988 version was much better.

Now, I’m not one of these mom’s basement-dwelling ATOT members who bashes all chain restaurants and anything popular. Chain restaurants have their place and sometimes, I’m too lazy to drive over to a local pizza place so I’ll order one from a chain. And yes, I still eat Taco Bell on occasion, though that is another chain which is worse than it was in the 70s and 80s.

quality at those places has just dropped considerably, as they've all expanded and essentially consolidated under one or two major umbrella corps that own all of these franchises.

Red Lobster was definitely considered fancy-light fancy when I was growing up, but you'd never willingly go there these days. Golden Corral was also a solid place to get steaks, on a budget, but then they went whole hog on the buffet thing, completely re-branded themselves and...well, you'd be lucky to grab a steak off the meat pile that hasn't been contaminated by some other filthy customer and their kid's diarrhea.

They are even worse when you live somewhere at high elevation. They apparently can't figure out the microwave times for reheating their food so it all comes out cooked wrong. I was coerced into eating at Red Lobster and Chiles when I lived in Flagstaff(7k feet up) and it was kind of hilarious at how badly they messed it up.

That's the one that blows my mind. I remember back right around your time...a pizza at full menu price is basically the same price as now. Factor in inflation then do a 50% off deal...egads. Result: They suck.

BTW, Amiga 3000 was the best; except for that damn ZIP memory.

It just might be. :D

Cold, snowy day outside and you get to come home and throw one of these in fireplace.

I've got more firewood than I can use. Cut up a big branch of plum tree yesterday, I have even more. Never bought firewood in my life.

I live on wooded property, so I'm in the same boat as you concerning having plenty of wood to burn.

However, none of them smell like KFC chicken as they burn. :p

Actually, I heard that indoor fires aren't good for your health, all that particulate matter. I don't do it a lot although I don't have central heating.

I don't do it too much down here in NC. We really only do it when we get that insanely cold air when those damn Canadians allow the polar vortex to dip too far south into the U.S. :p

In a world where Popeye's exists, I see no justification for the continued existence of KFC
Agreed. And I was sorely pissed when Popeye's close their location in Granite City where I live. They do indeed taste way better then KFC does, just as Church's does as well.
