The more that I think about theoretical physics, the sadder I become

How important is life? Spontaneously generated, we mean nothing. Just a natural formation of chemicals, no wonder man created a God to give us a meaningful purpose. I am not going to influence the universe, so why try to pursue a career to benefit myself? I am so sad. :(

That's quite a stretch. Maybe God is a natural formation of chemicals and He/She created people to give Him/Her a meaningful purpose.

Me, I like theoretical physics. It's loony. Love the silly names for tiny bits - quarks, mesons, and so on. Love the strange theories like Schroedinger's cat and the Butterfly effect. String theory? What are those physicists smoking? Etc. It's fun.

Maybe. Like you said, it's weird. You can't rule out anything.

I don't see why you should be sad. Life is what you make it. You are only meaningless if you let yourself be, and think of yourself as such.

There are plenty of Evolution vs. Creationism, Existence of God or not, and other philosophy threads you can read to distract you from your sadness. ;)

evolution dictates you will probably find meaning in the relationships you have with other people. we have evolved as social animals, afterall.

Yea i feel you man, makes me feel completely worthless knowing I am just a random formation of atoms. Why do anything when in the end all these atoms will break down to form something else?

The usual evolution of thought goes like this:

1. You start to understand science and you are amazed.
2. You understand think about the fundamental aspects of life and displace "higher powers".
3. You start to realize that human thought, love, sight, everything can't be a coincidence.
4. You come to the conclusion that everything is so perfect because of God.
5. Repeat every few years until you die.

Hopefully, if there is a god, you are on step 4 when you die.

There's always the possibility of subscribing to another metaphysical system of beliefs that gives more value to our lives. It's not entirely impossible that we're not just a group of atoms, but actually have something which we call soul.

there are times when you have to step back after learning about theoretical physics to realize most of it is just crap.

~Ed <~ reading the Correspondence Letters of Liebniz and Clarke right now. monads are retarded,.

Bleh, or just realize when yer dead, you wont even know, so its not that big of a deal. And yer friends and relatives will stop grieving when they die, since they wont know anything anymore either.

Why? if there is a God, it will not give a crap where you are in that stupid cycle. When will Christians understand? If there is a God, it is not a fanatical egotist.

You're right, we are just a collection of atoms, molecules, subatomic particles, energy transmissions, electrical impulses. Ultimately it doesn't matter what we do, because at a very basic level all of our actions are nothing more than the creation of heat. Conversion of matter to energy. Nothing that you do ultimately matters. Go kill your best friend, go masturbate in the street, go wreck your car, it doesn't matter. It's no different fundamentally than any other human activity, and in the grand scheme of things it means nothing. Doesn't that sound liberating? Whatever you want to do, go for it!

Yeah, what's with those people? Let's nuke the middle east, put poison in the food going to the victims of all the recent disasters for a good joke that'll make us laugh, destroy the environment to build kick ass resorts, bang every woman in sight, beat the ****** out of anyone we don't like, and stay high till we die! Nothing matters anyway! Not my life, yours, your families', friends', or anything else that breathes.

Well, do they? After you've done all that, and human civilization has come and gone, the sun becomes a red giant, then a white dwarf, and then a black hole, and the solar system collapses into it, which is just a marker in the timeline of the universe... does it really matter that we nuked the Arabs?

According to the theory, no it doesn't. There's no need for value of anything in reductionism. It just seems we put alot of effort into trying to preserve life as it is. If there is no intrinisic value in existence, why exist at all?

I guess the discussion is over? Maybe AT is going down the tubes, an interesting discussion and hardly anyone replies. Let's add some pictures of girls or something to this thread.
