My first attempt; used my free Nikkor 70-300mm G lens and free tripod (I love Craigslist) with my D80.

At a curiosity, what was the resolution of the cropped moon (before resizing)?

Roughly 490x490. Even with a 10MP sensor, 300mm isn't enough reach IMO.

ive shot similar one with my sigma 100-300, you need a 2x TC or a 600mm lens to really get it at a decent size, the sigma 50-500 takes nice moon shots also

I tried last night with my 80-200/2.8 and my D50. Since the moon is so bright, I'm gonna try again tonight, but with stacked 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.

Get a telescope (and maybe a webcam). And don't image the moon when full, much more interresting when half or somewhere in between because of shadows on the terminator showing craters much more clearly.
