The misery of my A7V and Duron

Well where to start! Several people have asked what happened to my new setup. Well get ready for a ride in RMA hell 🙁
Motherboard
I had RMAed the motherboard and it got sent to the wrong home during return shipment. They then made the addresse send it to me out of his own pocket in hope of future reimbursment. Turns out he also had a problem with the Asus A7V. Then I received the MB to find out the sensor had been removed from the box. I called the store and they told me that they threw the "one use" sensors out. I asked why they didnt replace it they said I don't need a sensor..yea right.. After some haggling they sent me a new one via USPS in a letter envelope. Not before accusing the other person of stealing it from me.Cute eh 🙂.
Duron
Well I am now on my second cracked duron. I Must be retarded or something. The socket A golden orb creamed my core. Thankfully the place I bought from replaced it. They said they have replaced close to dozens of Durons!! Then I went to a Globalwin FOP32 the recommended one on AMDs site. During installation I bent the retension clip to almost limp, so I could place this on relatively easy. Anyway to make it short, the core did not survive the installation. This time I was pissed, The place I bought it from said no way to me this time. I emailed AMD thanks to Tripleshots advice. I am waiting for a call back from them while they check out the retailer for something.

Its going on about two months since I bought all the components for this. And I have yet to even POST. Hopefully it gets better..

And Yes I know thousands have got the duron installed without killing the Duron core. I dont know what I do wrong I go out of my way to install the HSF.

That's rough. Maybe you should invest in one of those copper spacers. They apparently don't do a whole lot for cooling, but they should protect the core.

Man I though I had problems 🙂

I dont know about the mammaboard, but I WILL tell you one thing: the Golden Ord is NOT meant for AMD chips, and you are NOT the first to have your Duron broken by it. Should have waited until the Silver Orb came out 🙂

UM i have a fop32 and a duron installed and took it off many times and thus far i have not killed it (knock on wood). Anyway, maybe u are doing something wrong?

eh man, don't give up. you are buying what AMD is recommending so if you break something they should replace it, if you are close to the computer store have them install it. I remember when I did mine I was sweating like a pig and the first time I turned the power on (I think I did a litte prayer) was like nothing I ever experienced so I think I know how you feel but keep at it man.

HI,

A little tip for those worried about breaking their Duron cores.

I've also broken a core, so I speak from experience.

What I did on my second chip was to place some flat toothpicks under the heatsink and on the ceramic with the ends sticking out so that I could pull them out after clipping on the HSF. This way the HSF settles down flat on the core instead of putting a lot of pressure on one edge first.

It worked for me.

Thats not a bad Idea Atroz.. Ill try it with my next chip. Or I am just gonna have the local Mommapappa store do it for me heh.

Get rid of the orb. It doesn't perform as well os other coolers anyway. I have never heard a single story of a broken SocketA processor on anything BUT a Golden Orb.

I think I have comprimised my TBird 800 with an Alpha 6035. It sure as hell doesn't take much to f* up the die. You would think that AMD would put copper caps on them or something so us brutes wouldn't screw up as many processors.

I coverd my a$$ though. I bought a Retail TBird, so I can go directly to AMD for a replacement.

My 2 cents. Direct pressure on the core will not cause it to crack. In fact the clips are so strong cause AMD specs 12-20 lbs. The problem is rocking the heatsink on the edge of the core. Holding the heatsink flat with steady pressure while fastening the second clip is the key to a good install.

Are the durons more shatter-prone than their more expensive counterparts? I have a TB 750@950 and have messed around with the HSF quite a bit. I have an Alpha7HO and have probably taken it on/off about 5 times.

Don't really know what I would have to do to break it, but what has worked for me is as follows: Regardless of what the directions on your HSF say, install the stationary end of the clip on the side of the socket that is AWAY from the little ridge on which part of the HS sits. Make this part of the install as easy as possible by angling the clip down until it takes just a small amount of force to get it to set. Now set the HS down flat on the core and ridge. This way, now that you have to begin applying pressure, you are applying most of it over the plastic ridge rather than the fragile core itself.

Best of luck

haha.. sorry grey.. that sux! I just finished my second duron system with no probs... (except the stupid kt7 isnt laid out correctly for a SILVER orb... wont fit) SO, I guess I've got a silver orb for sale... as if anyone in my region even knew what a duron was! I hate living in the boonies sometimes. The silver orbs go on no problem. Try again grey, and don't be discouraged! Learning the hard way IS INDEED better than not learning at all... just a bit more expensive 🙂
I bet your next duron will be just fine... just don't crack another core or we'll have to publicly flog you🙂

HungryPete, I seriously doubt I would post a 3rd cracking Duron 🙂. TroubledShooter, Ill try that as well next time. The locking ridge on the HSF might aleve some of the rocking I suppose if I push onto that as well..
