Well.. I went to this chinese restaurant (not americanized) with my friends today and one ordered this menu called "Stinky Tofu".. I'm like "what?" but she says it's good.

When it came, it literally smelled like.. they made the tofu out of poo. Fried poo to be exact. I tried half and was about to throw up. Ruined my appetite for everything. I was quiet about it since it was my friend's favorite, but i couldn't stand it.

My point, if you see a "stinky tofu" in your chinese menu, believe it.. and don't order it.

Stinky Tofu is fermented tofu which is later deep fried and you are correct when it smells "bad". But frankly, I love this stuff and I would definitely order it when it is available on the menu.

I don't think more than five Chinese restaurant's in SF serve this stuff but everytime I go to Taiwan and see them being cooked in the food stalls in the street - I eat!

Smells bad, but it tastes good. Strange but true.

Only for the adventurous though. I'm surprised your "friends" let you try it though. ;) Most people can't get over the smell enough to actually eat enough to like it.

What smells bad and tastes bad is the fruit Durien. It even looks like puke.

Wow..my family loves that stuff. It smells bad..but only at first. I remember when I was a little girl in Taiwan..I'd always say "eww..." and not have any. But as I got older, it's become sort of like a special treat to have because many restaurants in the States won't make them for fear of their American customers complaining about the smell. Blah..
