If I was after the 3-D girl effect, I'd want a different movie in IMAX. Matrix is all about the effects, which will work well in an IMAX theater imo.

Besides, trinity's not all *that* hot.

I saw it, and IMO you really didn't miss much. Omnimax (for those that haven't heard of it) is a huge, domed screen that gives a nearly 180 degree (horizontal) picture (it's supposed to fill almost all of your field of vision). It's cool as hell for the National Geographic-style movies they usually have, with long-distance views and smooth motion. It didn't really work for Star Wars, though.

The screen is so close that I had to keep turning my head back and forth to follow the action, and in all of the closer scenes the characters filled most of the screen from top to bottom. We were sitting right in the middle, and I if I looked straight ahead (where most of the action is in the normal Omnimax movies) I was staring at their shoulders. The video was a little "washed-out" looking, like it wasn't quite bright enough, and the motion felt a little choppy. The sound was cool as hell though, far better than in either of the theaters I saw it in.

It was worth $10 bucks just to see it, but next time I think I'm going to save my money.

That's the reason I balked at going. I really couldn't justify paying 10 or so bucks to see it again at an imax for the 15-20 min of good scenes (light saber duels and the asteroid belt). And I was afraid of having to scan the whole screen constantly to keep up. Not to mention seeing 40ft Anakin whine like a ricer without his fartpipe.

OmnImax does definately lend itself to "emersive" movies where they just drop you inside something and you are not in jeopardy of missing something if you don't look right or left.

IMO IMAX is overrated for feature films. The screen is just TOO big and it doesn't have the same experience as going to a REALLY good theater with a large (not huge) screen and fantastic sound system. Granted, in cities where "premium" theaters are nonexistant (i.e. anyplace except LA or NY) IMAX is definitely much better than your average cinema.

If you're in LA I strongly suggest checking out the following theaters:
Arclight (on Sunset)
Graumann's Chinese (Hollywood / Highland)
Mann Chinese 6 (Hollywood / Highland)
The Vista (Hollywood / Sunset in Los Feliz)
The Grove (Fairfax / 3rd)
Fox Theater (Westwood Village)
Bruin Theater (Westwood Village)

w00000t! I just hope they have it here. Our IMAX is usually overrun by kiddie shows and what not for the tourist-trap that this town has come to be.

For those in the Pittsburgh area...here is an e-mail I received back from the Carnegie Science Center (Home of the OmniMax):
Carnegie Science Center will not be showing Ghosts of the Abyss in the Rangos Omnimax Theater.

Our films for 2003 will be:

February 21 through June 19: Coral Reef Adventure and The Human Body

June 20 through October 16: Lewis and Clark Great Journey West and Coral Reef Adventure

October 17 through December: Jane Goodall?s Wild Chimpanzees and Lewis and Clark

We will be posting information on our website about the Matrix in the next couple of weeks.

Movies that are ported to Imax are not all that great. I saw Starwars Ep II in an Imax theater and it wasn't all that much better (if at all) than a regular theater. You are just sitting closer to the screen and don't have people's heads in the way.

Goto Imax.com and just look up your local city. Yes, SJ, CA has one. Being in the Bay Area rocks, we have three or four IMAX screens within 40 minutes of each other.

Our IMAX insists on not playing feature films; that's what we were told when we asked about Episode II, and yet last time I went they were showing The Lion King. Bastards :(

This will be a Super 35mm transferred to 70mm using the DRM process. IMAX aspect ratio is 1.44:1, and the matrix was filmed in scope (2.39:1) so something either has to be cropped or recomposed, if it were done natively in the scope ratio that would cause some sever pan and scan problems it will be interesting how it will look. (My guess is not that great)
