The maps that get DL'd when playing UT online...can I save them for Single player?

Message title is kind of vague...but I tried...anyway.

I'm new to online gaming. When playing UT online, I've noticed that there are custom-made levels. New maps that I don't have on my version (4.36 - latest one) of UT. Once connected to the server, the map automatically downloads, and I enter the game.

Is there a way of saving this map to my HD, so I can play a single-player game on it? Forgive me if this is a stupid newbie question....um, cause I'm a stupid newbie. To online gaming anyway. If you guys could educate me, I 'd appreciate it. Thanks much.

not really...
when you download the maps, they're stored in the cache directory (c:\games\unrealtournament\cache -- i think). the next time you play it, the map's info is read from the cache file (you can check cache.ini to see which file is which map)... in a sense, you can play that map, but you can't really load it yourself (confused? please don't be ... 😉 )

however, you can take note of the map name (or get it from cache.ini), go to download.com or nalicity and get the maps from there, then you'll have a copy of your own to use on/off-line... there are some other places, but nalicity is quite reliable imo

the problem if you don't download the file themselves is that the cache will eventually expire and you'll have to download the maps again the next time you play.... also it's a good idea to d/l so the next time you install the game, you only need to extract the files and don't need to go thru all the d/l sequence again...

and btw, 4.36 is the latest patch... and with that you don't need to insert the game cd to play the game.... well, just in case you didn't know about that 🙂

happy fragging 😀

somebody get our flag back!!
