There are better ultrarunners out there, but all Dean-hating aside, he is a great runner. To be able to keep going like he (and others) does is astounding to me.

If he never reaches his acid threshold, it just means his oxidative metabolism capacity is always greater than his lactate production rate. He could reach it if he exerted more effort.

But yeah, Kaido's right. It's his great cardiovascular system and oxidative capacity that are superior to ours. Most people can run "forever." Just at different amounts of sustained effort.

I remember reading about a guy who never ran. Was at a bar drunk and decided to run home. While drunk, the guy ran home. I forget how far home was. But he realized he could run and not stop even though his conditioning was questionable. Turns out he has the same gift as the guy in the article.

You may be remembering the backstory behind Dean. That's pretty much how it began for him.

Yeah, I definitely hit a wall fast. When I'm out of shape, that's about 100 feet down the road - I start tasting blood  When I'm in-shape it's longer, but I still hit a wall eventually. That's amazing that some people don't have that!

That article looks a bit too sensationalist, but if there's some truth to it, well, whoa!

If you think that article is sensationalist, you should see the episode of Stan Lee's Superhumans about Dean K.
