Please realize that there are many on AT that do not divulge their financial situation - those that do either don't care, or feel more positive about their lot in life and don't mind sharing anything that may reveal said lot in life.

Also, this is a tech forum. Most people work in the tech sector, and many have been around for a long while, so they have reached upper IT levels, where money is much better than the average job.

Gotta do what we can to keep the top of society rich, otherwise those benevolent souls wouldn't give us so darn much money in return in the form of good wages and benefits.


If this wealth distribution was done across a small group of around 30 people, there'd be some beat-downs in short order, and not the worship-the-incredibly-rich mentality that's so prevalent.

15% make under $5k a year? Thats only 85 working days in a year at minimum wage. It would be nice to see a break out on what the numbers look like for those who work full time.

Also - this is in regards to taxable income. Pre-tax contributions to things like retirement, health care contributions etc are not accounted for.

Back of the napkin calculation: there are about 25 people making more than $31k per year who are contributing to retirement all but the final $30k of their income.

But, why are you discounting for health care contributions? "You whining rich son of a bitch. You make $40k per year!" "But, I have to pay for my family's medical insurance - that eats up 1/4 of my income."

It says it's what you see on the W2 form, not after.

There are a good number of people that work for cash in lower income though.

Stupid and dumb, maybe, maybe not. Deserve nothing, spot on. They are given rights through the constitution, but the means to live are on them to provide for themselves. Why should someone who does not take the initiative to better themselves deserve anything? We're not talking those who can truly not provide for themselves via illness or the likes, but those who choose to squander what could have been an education or a providing job. I see it all the time as a manager, employees who feel entitled to a higher wage because of length of tenure or completing their given task. You are paid for your task fairly, if you do not like it find another job or strive for more. They do not deserve a raise unless they excel in or exceed their duty. I see guys who are so short sided they will leave a 365 job for a short term job because it pays a few bucks more an hour. They don't deserve anything when their employment ends. They also do not get re-hired once their short term jobs end, they are unreliable and obviously not committed to the company. There's countless other examples. It comes down to one fact, they don't deserve more than they themselves are willing and able to attain. The supplementation of the lazy only hurts the working class and the businesses that would hire those people.

Shipped all of the good paying jobs out for those that couldn't or didn't want to go to college and this is what you end up with. Ross Perot says "I told you so"....giant sucking sound indeed.

All the people saying college is a sure fire way you're gonna find a job that pays well don't know what they're talking about. I have read countless stories of people who have payed thousands of dollars for college only to not find a job. But I digress. Perhaps if they took classes for what they wanted to do. I mean I hear a lot of people take psychology. Do you really need fucking psychology? Is it going to help you in a carrier? :rolleyes:

Why would you guys gloat about the fact that you make more than the poor? I'm actually a bit pissed, sad and worried that there are so many people who make less than $30k a year.

Why? Because guess who has to pick up the slack when people aren't able to carry their own weight? We do. The middle and upper class. Wouldn't you like to pay less in taxes? Wouldn't you like to keep more of your pay? How is that going to be a reality when more and more people are being forced on public assistance? I know a few people who are getting $100=200 a month in food stamps alone. We are paying for these services.

College doesn't make you a better person; being a better person often leads you to college.

Without school I wouldn't have gone from "fuck, the power is out because we didn't pay again" to lower upper middle class.

I'm a Journeyman myself, did Trade school and some College in the past.

One former wife had a Masters in Psychology.

My wife now of 20+ years has a degree in Criminal Justice I guess, but she isn't in that field even. But I think Psychology even lends itself into those areas also.

It's variable, but many fields use it. Probably isn't going to make a difference if your an Engineer or something along those lines of course.
