the long pause

RU482

Lifer
I have seen this with my old rig (xp) and my new rig (vista) often when clicking a post, or replying to a post. There will be a long pause, sometimes up to 20 seconds. It's always puzzled me. Anyone have any insight?

I do not encounter this behavior on other websites or forums.

There are 56,001 threads on this issue.
Basically, Fusetalk and Anandtech servers suck.

Sigh, you're right. What was I thinking. Can this be oldsmoboats law #2? Can we start the 10 commandments of oldsmoboat?

Fix provided by bamacre in nearby thread on the same topic:

Speed up AT Forums...

In Windows XP and Vista...

1. Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt
2. Click Command Prompt This will open a DOS command window.
3. Type: notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts
4. Locate the line 127.0.0.1 localhost
5. Add this text under 127.0.0.1 localhost:

127.0.0.1 dynamic2.anandtech.com

Save. Exit. Enjoy faster AT forums.

Here are my added notes:

Remove the Read Only attrib. from the HOSTS before editing

On the line you add to the HOSTS file, make sure there are two spaces between the numeric address part and the text address part, and that there are no spaces within the text part. You may get different if you just cut & paste. The HOSTS file is a text database and the layout is important. I fixed the line in this post so can C&P it, so you may not need to tweak it, but good to know the standards anyway.

And be sure to set the HOSTS file back to Read Only as that helps protect the HOSTS file from malware meddling (but only a little bit).

This little patch has helped my forum access greatly as I'd been waiting minutes for screen updates here. Now it's right speedy... "Meesa happy fella!" says Jar-Jar. Meesa thanks bamacre!

If you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed and you are getting a strange slowdown on AT, trying disabling email scanning completely and see if it speeds you up.

how about a version that fixes AT for a blackberry.

Does the BB have an analog to the HOSTS file (which lists addresses of calls to be rerouted to the local host). Any OS that enables access to the Internet should have some such.
