The little computer that won't load

Windows XP. A friend brought his "backup" computer over today. He says he's been getting blue screens, but had no other info. I booted up his computer 3-4 times, and after the Win Logo appears, the bar runs for a few seconds, then freezes. I tried Safe Mode, and all I get is the "Safe Mode" in the corners. No error msgs. Since there's nothing on the computer I thought I'd just do a format/reinstall. I tried the reinstall several times, but each time it would load the files, and when it got to the option window (Continue install-Repair-Quit) thew computer freezes. Then I noticed during a boot that there's only 128m of RAM. I opened the case to see if a stick was loose, but that's all there is. I've never seen XP with 128m, so before I start tearing it apart, I wanted to find out if the "no load-no reinstall" could be caused by the paucity of RAM. It's an AMD system and my friend says it's about 3 years old. The stick of RAM is Value RAM, so I guess someone has messed with the RAM before. So, can someone tell me if this thing should even load Windows? Thanks in advance.

Is it a rebuild?

Sounds like a sound card IRQ conflicting with something else. I've had this problem before.

Try doing an install without any extra PCI devices installed (excluding PCIex if it has that as Video).

Thanks for responding. All I looked at today when I had the case opened was the RAM. I didn't really feel like messing with it with only 126m, but I'll go ahead and pull everything but video out and try it again tomorrow. I don't think this was rebuilt, but someone messed with it. He's a surveyor, and said he used to run his CAD programs on it. He said his brother-in-law had worked on it, but doesn't want to anymore. Brother-in-law probably stole his RAM, LOL.
