I'm in the market for a new laptop

and I think it's going to be a dell again 🙁

I am replacing my Dell 600m, which has served me very well btw.

I think the 720m might be worth a look when it comes out?

Well at least you have the sense not to get baited in by the Sony smoke screen..which ususally results in very ordinary products at extrodenarily high prices. Oh by the way...I think the Dell is a very decent option for your ultralight considerations.

Since I recommend Dells to all my students, you can get some great discount coupons by just googling "Dell Coupons".

I've worked on Sony Vaios twice and don't want to do it again. Try changing the Vaio's RAM memory or do work on the LCD and you will opt for an IBM, Dell, or Toshiba immediately.

I've started with a Latitude LM and progressed to my present 600M; my students have gone to 6000s and now the newer versions. The 14' LCD is minimum for me and anything smaller is really difficult for me to entertain. Well that's my lot.

Do you want an optical drive built in? Are integrated graphics good enough? Toshiba, Fujitsu, Averatec, Asus, Lenovo, and Acer also make ultra-portable laptops.

I'm not really picky and integrated graphics should be good enough as long as it's ultra portable.
I will be mostly using it for school work... completing school projects, programming projects, etc.
I see people in my classes that bring in these Sony's and other really tiny laptops.. I go to the sony website and it costs $3000

I want to spend less than a $1000 if possible

X40 used will meet everything. Extremely light ~2lbs, 12.1" screen, a used one on the forums is around $8-900.

I use a Dell 700m. It was inexpensive (50% off coupon) and had a built in optical drive. Most of the smaller ones didn't or they costed a lot more.

New Dell 12" ultraportable (700m or I think 720m is newest) with coupons is your best bet. I've seen them, look sharp; haven't handled one, but I hear they are built pretty well.

A used Thinkpad X-series would also work, but probly not near your price range with any decent features.

Averatec makes some cheap ultraportables, but you get what you pay for. Build quality isn't very good at all.

if u liked the size of the 600m, checkout the Latitude D620. It's 14" widescreen, and a very sweet lookin laptop for a Dell. I was thinking of getting that sometime to replace my 8600.

Dell Latitude X1. Smallest 12" I've seen (2.5lb, razor thin). $1249 on Dell, includes external cd drive and 3 year warranty (usually a ~$200ish value). You may be able to coupon it down some more.

I own a MSI-1013 AKA S270 with a turion processor and this thing is great! If you want intel go with the MSI-1012 (S260) or even the newer S262.
Asus makes great notebooks as well the Asus W3 or W6 are also nice notebooks.
