The letter J

Did you learn to write J with or without the line on top?

  • With a line

  • Without a line

My son is starting to doing handwriting and I noticed that the letter J no longer has the line on top like a T. When did this change? looking at my keyboard, I notice it has the same J without the line.

Its always been like that, some fonts or writing do not have that the top. However, the correct way to teach kids is still to have the line on top.

I always wrote it with a line on top. But since then people got lazy. They dont dot their I's and cross their J's anymore

It's optional, and I don't use it. Neither way is more correct than the other. It depends on the font you use/write with.

I shall not be a serf to serifs. I shall name my first male child Sanserif to let the world know that 1) he is a boy and 2) that he shall never cower beneath any serif.

I'm Josh!

For me it was in 3rd grade, so 1986 or 1987. It was (and is as far as I know) acceptable to put the line above the J after that but none of the books used it. I liked it because it took less time to write my name out.

Weird though...looking at this font, there is half a line on the J

I shot the serif...
But I did not shoot the top of "T".

The line at the top of a J is just a serif with delusions of grandeur.

Fuck the letter J anyway. I was good enough for the Romans. (In the Latin alphabet, "Jehovah" begins with an I!)

For those answering no, what year were you in KG? was it in the US?
