First words I typed afterwards were "it's done" too.
Sorry dude, just remember he's in a better place now. Probably running around like an idiot having fun with other dogs while he waits for you to come throw a ball again.

Im so sorry to hear. I lost my cat in similar circumstances. had a tumor in his skull that destroyed his sense of sense. Vet says that cats need to be able to smell or else they wont eat. That was how he lost his appetite. I remember in vain trying to get him to eat, coaxing him, hand feeding him, pushing the bowl towards him, anything I could do. he would maybe take a bite and then just look at the food, just unsure what it was. you could see he was confused from lack of smell. it was then that I saw the writing on the wall. i cant explain the feeling of hopelessness as I tried to get him to eat and knew from there it was going to be downhill.

Anyway, not to make this about me. Just thought I would share my own experience. You did the best possible thing for your pal and spared him the ongoing losing battle with his sickness.

My condolences. We have a "Rocky" as well...and he too is a rescue dog. The folks we got him from were breeders...and he wasn't "breeder" quality. To begin with, they got fucked when they bought him...he was supposed to be pure long-haired chihuahua...he's definitely NOT. He might have some chihuahua in his blood lines, but it's a long way from pure.

This is the sad, pathetic-looking puppy we went to see:

Fast forward a couple of years to this bold adventurer:

He was at the bottom of the "pecking order" in their house...small, underfed, kicked around, and unloved...it took quite a bit to get him past that abuse...but now, he's a wonderful little mutt...with a heart as big as Wyoming.

Hang in their my friend. It will get better in time. The pain will reside and only the good memories will remain.

We are OK for the moment, we will miss him in the quiet times to come.
Right now we are going through his toys and trashing the really bad ones, and boxing up the others for who ever needs them.
There is a theme: headless, armless, squeakless toys that he systematically shook to pieces :)

He loved to "shop". His toys were in baskets up high on an armoire. Sometimes he would come and ask you and your job was to play 20 questions and figure out what it was. Sometimes he just wanted all the baskets on the floor so he could go "shopping". It might be one or two, or maybe every toy was removed, examined, and flung all over the room.

Here's to Rocky, and here's to you, Kelly.

Our companions live in our hearts long after their bodies betray them, and your heart is as big and fine as they come, my friend!

It is done. They found a tumor in his spine, not the ruptured disk that they could fix. I asked that he just not wake up from the MRI. Thank you all and sorry for posting such a downer.

So sorry for your loss. :(

I'm sorry for your loss. Rocky was a cutie.
He was, and try to imagine a miniature version when we first met him through the fence, exactly the same only a double handful. He was too cute to bear looking at. We were so glad we could rescue him from that situation.

to Shadow, and all those pets that go before us, and those that are still there.
Rocky lived life huge for such a smallish dog. He went everywhere, was welcome in any home that would have a dog.
A friend posted on FB of the time my wife worked for them. Don was a huge, imposing guy and rocky would fly up the stairs, on his lap, and plop down on whatever papers were on his desk corner and just lay there. He was the master of that situation. :D

About 6 or 7 years ago,I had to go through the same pain.

At the time my dog Sunshine(she was a yellow Lab) was dying from bone cancer.
The day we put her to sleep was the saddest day of my entire life.

I went through the halls at work(I'm working at Portland State University..been there since 2004)..just crying uncontrollably.
I couldn't help myself.

(Oh crap,I'm starting to cry just typing this.)

Our current yellow Lab,Alfie is still alive and kicking today, thankfully.
(He's 7 years old now,I think.)

Give Alfie a hug for us.
Right now it is hard to describe. I feel a huge weight has been lifted, bigger than the grief. I was worried about what we would do today, tomorrow, how he would be feeling. I know we did him right, and gave him that last gift at the right time. On FB so many of our friends and family are telling stories they have about Rocky. He really got around and went to every event and party with us.
The happy times far far outweigh the heavy times with this dog. We are so lucky and grateful to have had him in our lives.
I am grateful for your well wishes. Be glad for what your friends have given you and not sad for their passing.

I'm sorry to hear about Rocky. Sounds like he had a lot of personality and had a great owner who gave him a great life. My condolences. I will burn a candle for Rocky tonight.

RIP Rocky

That sucks man... sorry to hear. My wife and I put our lab mix of 12 years down almost 3 years ago and I still think about her often.

 to Rocky and to you.

Sorry for your loss. It is tough to lose a buddy and tough to do the right thing.

My dog is getting way up there, and your story will help me deal with losing her.

That's cool, because he thought he was a big dog and loved hanging with them. More than once at the end of a long day with a new big friend, he crawl up to lay by his feet.
