The Last Samurai - translation required!

Decent flick so far but I can't finish this without some English translation of the huge chunks of conversations in Japanese! I don't think it exists on the interwebs! Tried different kinds of subtitles but none of them seem to have a translation for the Japanese parts...they just blank out during those conversations. 🙁

Edit: Finished the movie. Meh. Bloated. Pretentious. Contrived. Why was I supposed to care for Tom Cruise's past? It was barely developed. I don't like it when I am made to feel a character is important when there is little in the way of background to justify it.

The Emperor had to kill all the Samurai before he realized that the "treaty" wasn't good for the Japanese way of life? He didn't know that already? He's the Emperor for freak's sakes!

Excellent cinematography though, decent music and costume design.

as if anything coming out of Tom Cruise's mouth or those who associate themselves with him (and his characters) are relevant.

Jesus Hume Christ. Idiots complain about having a menu or an FBI warning on their DVDs when you have to put up with this shit as a pirate.

The movie probably used forced subs for the Japanese parts and the subs you DL'd were the rest of them from the optional subs. There are probably pirate rips out there with the forced subs hard-encoded and the subs you have are meant to augment those.

Regardless, SHUT UP AND RENT OR BORROW THE DAMN MOVIE IF YOU'RE TOO CHEAP TO BUY IT!

Hell, this one cost me $5 on BD.

Yarrrr Matey. The blu-ray was chock full o' subtitlin' when arrr rented it from netflix.

It was no Shogun, but a decent Dances With Asians movie.

maybe i'm wrong, but i thought some of the japanese was not subtitled. been a while since i saw that movie.

sometimes the director just does it because the actual text is not the relevant, i.e. the scene offers visual cues to what was said.

Loved the movie, even if it was based on the same formula Zwick used in previous movies (at least this one perfected it).

The Hans Zimmer score makes it epic.

Not a bad movie, it needs the subtitles though. I was recently watching District 9 and said the hell with going to the menu and enabling the subtitles.

Hey, lighten up. It's summer time and a little piracy is good for your health.

That movie probably made MORE sense without the subpicture anyway.

You probably need to initialize all settings to factory default and check for a firmware upgrade...

yeah, it is an early Blue Ray player bought for the family a while ago, maybe 2 yrs?

thing i hate most about blue ray players is they are very slow to navigate 🙁

I think we know enough about his past to know why he's trying to run away from it.

I guess his face-to-face meeting with an American Captain-turned-Samurai is supposed to have changed his mind somehow. I guess the American demonstrated a greater sense of honor / duty to Japan than the emperor's own advisor.

Excellent cinematography though, decent music and costume design.
Yup. Especially the music!

It wasn't a terrible movie...for a Tom Cruise movie anyway...

As always, a suspension of belief/knowledge/truth is required for it to be accepted...

does anyone REALLY believe it happened that way?
A gaijin soldier, captured by the Samurai...becomes a samurai himself, falls in love with the woman of a samurai he killed in battle before he was captured...then fights with the Samurai chief to the end against the US trained Japanese forces, only to be granted a final audience with the Emperor, just in time to cancel a major treaty that would have made some of the Emperor's closest advisers wealthy men...then be invited to tell the Emperor the story of Toranaga?
🙄

Still...in spite of the script, it's not a terrible movie...for a Tom Cruise movie.
