Could not be any clearer than this:

61% still think that getting rid of Saddam was worth it "Thinking about any hardships you might have suffered since the US-British invasion, do you personally think that ousting Saddam was worth it or not" 75% of Shia think it was, only 11% of Sunni not surprising since they lost the most.

ProfJohn and Termagent: who gives a crap? Was getting rid of Saddam worth thousands of American soldiers' deaths?

I'm sure many countries would like for us to overthrow their dictators, but we have to watch out for our OWN interests first.

I wonder what a poll of Iranians, and of Al Queda, would say about whether the US overthrowing Saddam was good. I think they'd both say yes. Iran is grateful for their arch enemy Sunni government being replaced with a Shia ally government,.

Al Queda has had the chance to see the US greatly harmed by the war, and a secular government replaced with one based on religious law.

It's going on right now. Apparently, one defense lawyer was already thrown out of the courtroom, and one co-defendant, Ali, was cleared of all charges. Now they are saying some other officials are getting 15 years in jail each.

Edit: Former vice president gets life in prison.

Who knows really. I'm sure they'll have to go through the appeals process and all that too, so it should be a while.

All told for the defendants, three death by hangings, one life sentence, three fifteen year sentences, and an aquittal due to lack of evidence.

Who knows really. I'm sure they'll have to go through the appeals process and all that too, so it should be a while.

Yeah my bet is he dies of natural causes before he is ever executed. The appeallate court system in Iraq has yet to be set up, so its going to be years.

wonder what the political fall-out from this will be in the US, coming so close to the elections. at least from a republican stand point, I can see...

pro: saddam hussain get the death penalty. american like the death penalty and dislike saddam.

con: puts the iraq war back on the front pages, could cause violence in iraq to surge depending on local reaction.

Probably not much for two reasons.

One its to close to the election to have much effect.
Two it was a given hed be convicted and sentenced to death.

Really a story needs more than a day to have any traction in terms effecting polling. So all these people thinking this verdict was announced to help the GOP are just tin foil hat wearing morons that dont understand that it takes several days for something to effect polling. Just look at the Foley situtation. It didnt really hit the polls for a week and a half. But it doesnt really matter because of #2, everyone saw this a foregone conclusion.

The exception to #1 would be if they pulled Osama out of a hat. That would likely effect the polls.

seems like it'd be just the opposite. happening two days before the election, it's bound to still be at the forefront of people's minds as they go to the polls, as opposed to the whole Foley thing, which is already fading fast.
