The article does not say Blockbuster is going out of business...and I doubt it will, even with increasing prices. The Blockbuster in my area is always packed.

I agree that BB will probably be around awhile. People still like the little trip to the video store with the family to pick out movies for the wekkend type of scene.

Yup. Blockbuster will always have a market until someone figures out how to get highspeed broadband into every home that has a box that can receive movie downloads on demand cheaply.

I really don't get the dislike for stores like Blockbuster. Frankly, Blockbuster has been great to me. In fact, as of right now, I'm in the middle of my 2nd free Blockbuster online trial (well, I paid $1 for 1 month), and I also am a member of Blockbuster rewards so I got another free store rental in addition this month to the two free store rentals that came with Blockbuster online.

Yeah, SBC and others are doing a great job out there. Meanwhile, Bellsouth has gone past dragging its feet to dragging its knees in doing serious upgrades in the southeast.

Yeah, SBC and others are doing a great job out there. Meanwhile, Bellsouth has gone past dragging its feet to dragging its knees in doing serious upgrades in the southeast.

Agree to a certain extent but if France can promise FTTH to the country, can the USA afford not to?

What the hell is FTTH? I don't think BB is going anywere anytime soon. They may divest in unprofitable areas but in others they thrive, like my neighborhood. We have 2 BBs and 1 Hollywood Video (superior in my opinion) and all three are always busy. The kiosks you can rent movies from in the supermarket and such for $1 are gaining popularity also so that my affect the traditional rental places but from what I see they still do a hefty business....at least in my area.

yeah they are going down. I even worked for BB and i think they are.

Someone was also telling me that they are no longer getting videos for sale that are new..since they couldnt pay their loans. They still get them for rent but soon they wont be able to sell them new.

Eventually they will deff go down

I agree, it was a good read.

I don't understand how Blockbuster isn't making money. You license the movies, you rent them out, and pay some staff to support it. The infrastructure is already in place. They must have some serious debt to content with right now.

They also have hidden costs, they pay over $100 a copy for movies they get from studios that are unreleased.

What people don't get is that it doesn't matter if one or two stores do well, or if your local store is "always packed", they are LOSING MONEY, hand over fist. They used to make a lot of money off late fees, no more. Every copy of a new movie that they buy to rent costs them almost $100, sometimes more, and then they have to turn around and rent it 60-100 times just to break even on that individual tape. That doesn't leave a lot of room for profits, expenses, all that.

Individual stores may be doing alright, but as a whole the company is dying, and if the company goes under, the stores will all close up, no matter how well they seem to be doing.
