....SHIT, why haven't i heard of these guys before?!

i just discovered eluveitie and fuck these guys are awesome. i've been on a death metal kick lately- typically i listen to a lot of metal, but it leans toward 'progressive metal' (dream theater and the like) or more of a metalcore and/or post-hardcore kinda vibe (glassjaw is one of my all-time favorite bands; all that remains, killswitch engage, atreyu and the like are still favorites). but death metal with melodic leanings is pretty damn close, especially a lot of the modern scandinavian stuff. eluveitie is basically melodic death metal with woodwinds and such. it's pretty fucking awesome. i highly recommend checking out 'everything remains as it never was' if you're a metal fan.

seriously. take all that remains, subtract any subtuble emo vibes, and add flutes. result = awesomeness.

edit- server shit itself i guess, merge pls moderator person?

I saw Eluveitie last year, opening for Amon Amarth... They are awesome.

I recommend Gojira if you want to listen to some good metal.

Точка Опоры из Триады made my mind blown.

I like these.

I don't think I've been blown away by a new band in a while.

Currently digging these guys that I just heard of: http://theleadership.bandcamp.com/album/frontiers

Otherwise, lately I've been digging more into bands that I've known of slightly, but for a long time. Like Archers of Loaf:

I've been listening to these songs over and over for the past week or so.

Folk Metal has a lot of gems. Skyclad was one of the founders of the genre, but Eluveitie is probably the best one at the moment. Korpiklaani is a nice one too (with nice songs like Beer Beer, Vodka, Tequila, Happy Little Boozer, etc), Heidevolk is good but sing in Dutch (try Nehalennia), and if you include 'Viking Metal' then Ensiferum rocks hard (try Stone Cold Metal or Twilight Tavern). Alestorm, being 'Pirate Metal', can also be seen as related to Folk Metal (try Keelhauled).

WTF is Folk Metal? It seems like two words combined that can't make sense.

I think it's what you listen to in the car while you're driving from your D&D session to the Ren Faire.

Edit: Oh for god's sake they sing in gallic? man i had this one nailed after only listening to a few seconds of one video. lol

Nothing new comes to mind that made my drop everything and say holy shit. I did see Bad Religion live a few months ago and for a bunch of aging alternative icons those guys are on their game. Best show I've seen in a long time.
