....SHIT, why haven't i heard of these guys before?!

i just discovered eluveitie and fuck these guys are awesome. i've been on a death metal kick lately- typically i listen to a lot of metal, but it leans toward 'progressive metal' (dream theater and the like) or more of a metalcore and/or post-hardcore kinda vibe (glassjaw is one of my all-time favorite bands; all that remains, killswitch engage, atreyu and the like are still favorites). but death metal with melodic leanings is pretty damn close, especially a lot of the modern scandinavian stuff. eluveitie is basically melodic death metal with woodwinds and such. it's pretty fucking awesome. i highly recommend checking out 'everything remains as it never was' if you're a metal fan.

I saw Eluveitie last year, opening for Amon Amarth... They are awesome.

I recommend Gojira if you want to listen to some good metal.

that would be fucking excellent. i just saw amon amarth on sunday in atlanta. great show. they served as their own 'opener'- played the new album in its entirety to a fairly respectful crowd, than did a second setlist of older songs for a bunch of maniacs in a mosh pit.

So where do you usually find out about your new music from?

Love eluveitie most of the time but occasionally get my fill of the flutes. Sometimes they're too cheerful for me. I just want to hear their rhythm section drive - always ready for that.

Wow, they sound exactly like every other death metal band ever. I simply cannot understand the rationale behind listening to this music. I don't care if that makes me shallow or ethnocentric, but this is just one guy screaming with weird instruments in the background.

Hell yeah, when I saw Eluveitie at Hellfest a few years ago, I was floored. One of my favorite bands!

For me, recently it would have to be Animals as Leaders (8-string ultra-technical instrumental progressive metal). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmfzWpp0hMc

Also, Tesseract (similar band, but with vocals and more atmospheric) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF_YIiRoRFM

In a different vein, Mumford and Sons (which I see has been mentioned already) is a great folksy rockish acoustic band; kind of similar to Old Crow Medicine Show (another one of my favorite bands). Good stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLJf9qJHR3E

Actually, another acoustic/folksy/bluegrass band that I recently found out about is Trampled by Turtles. They actually call themselves bluethrash because they are a bluegrass band that plays like a thrash metal band. Crazy fast playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xjdkc14-zwQ

And finally, going back to metal... ish. Devin Townsend (of Strapping Young Lad fame) has some absolutely stellar solo material. Just listen to this song all the way through. It starts out really slow and quiet, but halfway through builds to this absolutely amazing crescendo that gives me chills every time I hear it. Its nearly orgasmic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gmLplFmUns
