The Kinks - Lola

Was Lola really a man?

Lyrics: Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola"

Does that mean that Lola is also a man, or is Lola glad he's a man?

What do you mean? I hope nothing illegal?

The more I listen to it the more I am convinced Lola is a guy.

More lyrics: Im not the worlds most physical guy but when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine.... I'm not dumb but I can't understand why she walk like a woman but talked like a man..... Girls will be boys and boys will be girls its a mixed up, shook up world with my lola....

Definately a drag queen. Scandalous! lol

In the song, Lola, Lola is man dressed as a woman.

The way the story (per the way the tune goes) he walks into a bar, sees a hot chick, they start rapping etc, they go home together, he finds out that she is not a she, but a he.

He gets down on his knees in front of Lola :Q......and they end it there.

"And that's the way I want it to stay, and i always want it to be that way for my Lola..."

That last part "MY Lola..." makes me worry.

Heh, Lola was actually one of the first tunes I learned to strum on the acoustic guitar.

I'm sorry, but this is kinda sick.

You've obviously never heard the song. It's one of the all-time great bar sing-along tunes. 🙂 Hey, I'm Homophobic and even I dig this tune!

I'm not homophobic, but I sure am transophobic. I'm scary of men who look like women and eventually change their sex. That's what's a bit (?) disgusting IMO.

I grew during the 70s so Lola was nothing new to me. I guess I never paid attention to the lyrics until recently. Now I see it's a gay song! It's still a great song. I love oldies.

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
But while she tried to be a star,
Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, he worked from 8 til 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?

😀

It's pretty much accepted that Lola is a guy. The ambiguity was necessary to get it past the BBC censors so that it could get some airplay. It's supposedly based on a true story where one of Dave Davies friends got picked up by a transvestite in a bar.

The cherry cola or the coca cola version?

J/K they are the same, but that one word is different.

i had this song in my head one night (i dont know why...go away)
anyway, i wasnt listening to it, thought id look up the lyrics, which i do often when i get a song tune in my head and not the words...

and i noticed lola was a guy
and deleted it *shudder*

Ornery, that Lou Reed song is another one of my favorite oldies. lol

I also like Brother Louie by the Stories.

"She was black as the night
Louie was whiter than white
Danger, danger when you taste brown sugar..."

Good song.

My Dad jams with the Bass player from the Kinks once and a while. He lives in a little hick town in Ontario. 🙂
