somewhat better screen that's firmly attached, better speakers, hdmi, and $50 cheaper, gorilla glass, the Fire HD has some useful advantages too.

Might as well have both. ;)

The Nexus has Gorilla glass and I wouldn't be surprised if the 7" Fire HD is using the exact same panel since they are the same resolution.

I have literally never used the speakers on either of my tablets so I wouldn't consider that much of a selling point.

So locked and encrypted? The N7 was locked...

What this does mean, though, is that you should probably hold off on putting your order in until the development community can spend some time working with the new Kindles to judge how difficult a hack is going to be. With that said, initial reports aren't looking good.

From the AP link.

Exactly.

I kind of hope the bootloaders are encrypted and never cracked.

Amazon doesn't need any help selling its tablet. Let them live in their own ecosystem.

So why do you want another locked down platform barring you from owning your device?

Not sure about the N7, but that article states the Galaxy Nexus. Which does not have Gorilla Glass. Samsung stated back in December 2011 when the Gnex launched that they went with their own fortified glass design. Don't think I'd call it as good as GG2 though.

I don't. I was sort of interested in 8.9" WiFi but I already have too many tablets, and I don't need another I have to hack. Touchpad fills that void nicely. Locked bootloader just gives me the excuse I need not to buy it.

I feel like the first Fire did well as it did partially because of the support of the hacker community. I wouldn't mind seeing Amazon fail with their forked Android. I want to see the enthusiast and hacker community ignore and shun Amazon Fire tablets. Locked and encrypted bootloader will help towards that goal.

So you want another good option to fail? Me personally I welcome as much competition as possible.

If a device has a locked and encrypted bootloader, you do not truly own it.

LOL Really? Somebody is going to come to my house someday and take it away from me, telling me I didn't really own it? I'll tell my wife to look out for the jack booted Amazon people coming for her Kindle!

Thanks for making my morning. My boss is in my office, wondering why I'm laughing so hard.

Well that's obviously not true. I understand wanting it unlocked (my first gen Kindle Fire is rooted after all), but this statement is just over the top.

Exactly, the more successful tablets we have the better regardless of OS. The whole fragmentation debate is bullshit, the PC market is much more fragmented and it managed to survive and almost kill Apple's closed environment at least once.

You obviously own it in that Amazon can't come over and repo it out of the blue. But the locked bootloader limits your ability to use the thing greatly and many consider those rights a significant part of owning a device.

Rooting is not even close to the same as unlocking the bootloader. All the Verizon GS3 owners know all about that.

Should rooting allow installation of play.google, gmaps, etc.,or is unlock required ?
