The joys of Jury Duty.

So, I received a prospective juror notification today. I could probably postpone it since I'm in my last semester of college, but my classes are at night and I think it will be interesting.

In Salt Lake they give you $49/day if you get chosen for a jury. How much do you get in your area?

$49?!! Are you positive about that? I only got around $10 I think when I was on a jury this past summer.

I'm looking at the letter right here. I was actually floored by it, as my parents in Idaho have told me they got $5.00 for their service. Directly from the letter:

"In the end, you might not be called for jury service, but if you are, jury service does not go completely unrewarded. You will be paid $18.50 for the first day you attend court and $49 for each subsequent day you attend. The more important reward, however, is the pride you can take in serving your community."

First day at court is just showing up for the chance to be on a jury. So, if you actually get picked you're nearly bringing in $50 a day.

We didn't even get paid for the first day you show up, only if you get chosen, and only if that goes beyond the first day you showed up.
And to top it off the trial really was a waste of time and money.

People should just be compensated at the rate of what they are making currently at their job.

A doctor's time is a lot more valuable than a burger flipper's time.

That's crazy. I was on jury duty a month ago, it's something like $8 for the first day, $12 for each additional day. And ~30 cents per mile travelled. For 3 days of service I got $36.

Though thinking about it, I kinda understand why jurors don't get paid much - just think, $50 per day, the court costs for a trial by jury is $600, and the 3-day trial I was on, that's $1800 just for the jurors! Heck of a lot of money for whomever has to cover the costs that is their constitutional right...

I don't recall how much they said I would make per day. Both times I have gotten a letter they never called me in the whole week.

Which is why I began to realize why jurors don't get squat, to make it justice for more.

It was really weird going to jury duty for the first time. I show up the first day thinking how stupid it is and how all I wanted to do is get out of it. But then once I went into a courtroom for the jury selection process, and seeing the defendant so nervous can't even breath steadily, needing a jury to make a fair decision... kinda hit me that maybe I shouldn't be feeling this is a total waste of my time, maybe I should take this process more seriously...

After 34 years of breathing oxygen, I finally got my first jury summons a few weeks ago. I'm scheduled for Friday, the 26th. I'm sure I'll be miserable there but I'm kind of hoping I have to actually go, just for the experience. Though, everyone has told me that when I call the day before, the odds are that I won't have to go.

Not sure what we get paid here but I hope my company has a policy that pays me for the days missed, should I have to go.

I think the last time I served on a jury we got about $10/day. However Lunch + Parking usually ran $12-15 per day.

You'd think at the very least they'd at least validate your parking.. lol

As much as jury duty is a PITA, I found it to be interesting, of not the trial itself, but for the process etc.

The trial I served on was nothing like they are on TV.

Here you get nothing the first day and then a pittance for each day after that.

They pay your travel one-way only. I guess they expect you to walk back.

$8. you can pay for parking or lunch. but your jury pass is also a bus pass, so the smart thing to do is get on a bus. all buses go downtown in houston, so it's not much of a walk.

as the judge explained it, if the county paid you more, they'd have to raise taxes, so it all evens out in the end.

If I remember right, it is either $19/day or $29/day + mileage driven to/from home + parking is repaid in Nebraska. Also, I'm salaried at a good job so I would keep my normal salary.

Too bad I've never been called to jury duty. I'd like that bonus cash + time off without counting as a vacation or sick day. I keep hoping though. The experience alone would be fun.

Copy and paste from the webpage of the county I live in;

"If you are here in the morning and leave before noon you will be paid for a half day at $12.50 plus 10 cents per mile round trip. If you are here in the morning and leave after 12:00 p.m. you will be paid for a full day at $25.00 plus 10 cents per mile round trip."

The last time I was on jury duty I got picked for a trial that lasted nearly 4 months. The schedule was Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8AM to 1PM. I had to go into work on Wednesdays.

My fellow jurors were very unhappy about starting at 8AM, but my job normally started at 6AM and I was one happy camper. My employer paid me full pay to be on jury duty and I truly don't know how everyone else got by for as long a trial as it was.

My boss was going berserk though. Every Wednesday it was the third degree from him.

I actually enjoyed serving, although I found the case itself not interesting at all.
